The 2022 Barolo Villero is one of the highlights in this range from Oddero. Strong spiced and mentholated notes meld into a core of dark red-tone fruit. Leather, incense, tobacco, dried herbs, lavender and graphite lend notable layers of dimension. Bold and explosive, with tons of energy, the 2022 is very complete, not to mention an unqualified success for the year. All this needs is time to soften a bit. (AG)

The 2022 Giulia Negri "Marassio" Barolo is an exotic and high-toned expression from the highest vineyard in the Barolo zone (536m), located at the peak of the Serradenari hill. On the nose, it is notably exotic and saline, offering unique aromas of seashells and marine minerals alongside floral notes of summer flowers and mint. The palate is lighter in weight than typical La Morra Barolos but possesses great depth, showing succulent red berries, cherries, and a touch of caramel. It is characterized by its elegance and lean, sinewy structure, with a distinct salty, soil-driven finish that reflects its limestone-rich terroir.

The 2022 Giulia Negri "Serradenari" Barolo is high-toned and exceptionally aromatic, reflecting its origin in the highest-altitude vineyards of the Barolo region. On the nose, it is a bouquet of rosehips, orange rind, and wild cherries. The palate is characterized by its angularity and purity, featuring vibrant sour red fruit supported by ripe, polished tannins and a juicy freshness. While "La Tartufaia" is more textured and "Marassio" more saline, the Serradenari is celebrated for its crystalline refinement and energetic verticality.

The 2022 Barolo Ravera pours a bright medium red color and was bottled the same day as the Coste di Rose. The nose shows more depth and takes time to open, revealing notes of fresh cherries, graphite, and iron. On the palate, it has broader shoulders and firmer tannins, with greater mineral depth and richness. Drink 2026-2046. (AF) 96+

The 2022 Giulia Negri "La Tartufaia" Barolo is elegant and fragrant, named for the truffle forest surrounding the vines. The nose is a complex mix of wild cherry, espresso, and dried flowers with a distinct earthy, forest-floor undertone. On the palate, it offers juicy red fruit and sandy tannins, providing more immediate texture and "resonance" than her other labels. It finishes with a saline mineral grip and a lift of alpine herbs.

Pouring a transparent ruby hue, the 2022 Barolo Tre Tine is surprisingly graceful given the challenging season. Aromas of wild raspberries, fresh wildflowers, sweet tea, and orange citrus emerge from the glass. Medium-bodied, it offers sunny, charming fruit without heaviness, supported by refined tannins and refreshing acidity. A blend from Ravera, Le Coste, and Cannubi San Lorenzo, the wine reflects the estate’s effort to preserve freshness in the vintage. Drink 2027-2040. 9,000 bottles were produced. (AF)

A jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Barolo Bricco delle Viole saw one of the largest crop losses in the vintage, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of the fruit lost. Aromas of cherry cordial, framboise, preserved roses, and fresh lavender lead into a stunning palate that is pure, long, and beautifully balanced. As is often the case, this cuvée stands out in the range and may well be among the highlights of the vintage across the region. Drink 2026-2046. (AF) 98+

Floral, as is typical of this estate, with crunchy red fruit and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, with a blanket of delicate, tender fruit defined by chalky, precise yet silky tannins. Drinkable now with proper aeration, but will improve with some bottle age. (AF)

A transparent ruby hue, the 2022 Barolo Brunate Le Coste combines refined depth with a sense of weightless beauty. Aromas of black raspberries, polished flowers, graphite, and alpine herbs lift from the glass. Medium-bodied, it carries slightly broader shoulders on the palate, with notes of blood orange, cranberry, and redcurrant. The blend is roughly 80% Brunate with the remainder from Le Coste, whose sandy soils contribute finesse and aromatic lift. Brunate was among the vineyards most affected by drought in 2022, and production was roughly half of normal, yet the wine retains striking complexity and balance. Outstanding for its pure savoriness on the nose, showing earthy strawberries, peonies, violet candies and restrained blood oranges. Intense. Relaxed on the attack but with firm, dusty tannins and crisp, slightly lifted acidity. The finish is tight and austere yet juicy and balanced. This deserves time for better integration. Rich plum sauce, sage and sweet smoke come to life in the 2022 Primitivo Torcicoda's bouquet. Balanced, medium-bodied and soft in texture, its ripe red and black fruits swirl are complemented by a tinge of cocoa. The 2022 finishes tactile and long, gently tannic and incredibly fresh with citrus-laced blackberries and dark chocolate tones. (EG)

Intense and rich aromas of ripe red cherries, pressed flowers and watermelon. Light- to medium-bodied with ripe black cherry flavors, dusty yet dynamic tannins and a crisp, chewy finish. Try from October.

Fresh and restrained wine, with an exquisite mix of graphite, orange peel, dried cherries and strawberries, as well as whiffs of potpourri and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, it displays velvety, ripe tannins with tight-knit acidity and a juicy style, despite the more biting finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

The 2022 Barbaresco Sori Tildin exhibits fresh aromas of black raspberries, orange peel, anise, and toasted spices. It has a more immediate feel initially, but there is lovely structure and a layered complexity that unfolds in the glass to back this up. A step up on the palate, I love this where this is now. It has fantastic detail, with ripe tannins and a long finish. It’s a true pleasure all around and offered a more complete feel at this tasting. Drink 2026-2056. (AF)

The 2022 Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo is more contemplative of a wine, with aromas of deeper spice and an earthier component compared to the Tildin, but as it opens, it takes on pure notes of cherry liqueur, preserved orange, and forest earth. The palate is elegant but with a velvety texture upfront, even freshness, with a deeper richness to its texture. Long on the palate, with a long finish, it’s built for the long haul and is likely going score even higher in the future. (AU)

The 2022 Darmagi is another fabulous wine in this range from the Gaja family. Aromatic and vibrant to the core, the 2022 dazzles from start to finish. I have never tasted a Darmagi with this much textural finesse. Part of the approach in 2022 involved removing some of the skins after the initial vinfication. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and graphite all meld together in the glass. Polished tannins remind me of young Lafite. (AG)

Delicate and elegant, the 2022 Dolcetto d'Alba shows lovely fruit purity and fine balance. Dark red cherry fruit, rose petal, licorice and menthol all take shape in a Dolcetto that offers plenty of 2022 richness without losing its super-classic, mid-weight feel. (AG)

A blend of fruit from three MGA sites (Bricco Chiesa, Capalot and Fiasco), the Oddero 2021 Barolo reveals cassis and dried cherry, but it also shows extra spice and smoke at the back. You get mineral nuances over a well-structured and firm Nebbiolo. This wine requires a little extra time before it fully opens. Once it does, it offers a beautiful mouthfeel with zesty freshness, minerality and lots of energy. It undergoes a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and the wine ages in botte grande for 24 months. Production is 48,000 bottles, and the wine is priced competitively. (ML)

Fresh flavors of sour cherry, strawberry, rose hip and rhubarb are the main themes, with accents of eucalyptus and iron. Open and fluid, this leaves a slightly dry, chalky feel on the finish, evoking underbrush and tomato leaf. Elegant and intense. Best from 2028 through 2042. 80 cases made, 10 cases imported. (BS)

My favorite wine of the flight, the Barale Fratelli 2021 Barolo del Comune di Barolo hints at some of the savory notes (like cured meat and dried tobacco leaf) that we saw in the rest of the range; however, this wine has a stronger and fresher fruit side with cherry and blackberry. It is fermented in stainless steel and matured in French botti for 30 months. (ML)

The 2021 Barolo Sperss is a jeweled ruby color and has a beguiling matched balance of power and finesse. Seamless from start to finish, it offers notes of black raspberries, sweet flowers, fresh herbs, and apricot. It’s saturating with a medium-bodied richness that expands through the palate, with refined, polished tannins, even acidity, and a profound length on the finish. It’s a harmonious and resonating wine with a lot to enjoy over the next several decades. (AF)

This red is like a laser, yet there’s also a sappiness to its texture midpalate, with cherry, cranberry, rose hip, menthol and mineral flavors. Notable for its harmony, complexity and length, with an aftertaste that just keeps coming. Best from 2029 through 2047. 856 cases made, 180 cases imported. (BS)

The 2020 Barolo Sperss is a bright red color and reveals an incredibly floral profile of rose petals and ripe strawberries. Aromatically light on its feet, with a joyous feel, on the palate the structure is more focused and compact, with mineral undertones that weave through with more a defined nature. It needs more time, but this is a fantastic red to drink over the coming 30 years. (AF)

Incredibly open and complex with cedar, dried roses, plums and strawberries. Some toffee, too. Medium to full body, with fabulously polished tannins that give a fine, creamy texture, yet driven and energetic. Love the finish.

This is very powerful and structured, with aromas of black truffles, graphite and hints of dried thyme and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied and chewy yet polished. Hints of terra cotta and dark fruit. The finish goes on and on. March 2024 release. Best after 2028.

A super-complex and dark wine that’s restrained and layered. Elegant aromas of subtle black cherries, prunes, earth, minerals, peppermint and balsamic. Full-bodied and full of fruit concentration, with a lot of meat over its bones, firm velvety tannins and a long, refreshing finish that’s detailed and precise.

A restrained and fresh wine focused on licorice, red currants, violets and watermelon. It’s almost zesty in acidity, with a tight palate, a medium body and dusty yet ripe, lightly framed tannins. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

This has lovely aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange rind and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, tender, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Barolo has a lovely, layered spice profile on the nose, with bright notes of ripe cherries, fresh flowers, anise, and juniper. It is pure and approachable upfront, with refined tannins and a medium-bodied feel, although it has good richness and elegance. It’s a very harmonious entry Barolo to drink now and over the coming 10-12 years. (AF) 92+

Bright ruby in color, this is a restrained Barolo with wild strawberry, Parma violet, cinnamon and orange peel aromas. The palate is crisp, with dusty tannins, a medium body, good concentration of blood orange flavors, a tight-knit structure and a polished finish. Approachable now due to the balance, but will improve with time. Drink after 2029. (AF)

You could argue that this is the wine with the fasting growing quality trajectory because this vineyard site is one of those rare places in the appellation that appears to improve despite (or more likely because of) a changing climate. Ravera enjoys an open panorama (at 400 to 440 meters in elevation) that extends to the snow-capped Alps and benefits from cooler air currents, coupled with an amazing quality of light that you notice with the naked eye. The 2021 Barolo Ravera saw its fruit harvested later than the other wines, on October 11th, and continued with a classic Vietti-style fermentation with 20-plus days of skin contact. Simply put, what Ravera offers is complexity (and strength) with hints of bergamot, citrus, herbs, mineral and salt over a tightly concentrated mouthfeel. The quality of the tannins and the freshness of this 2021 are impressive, and that citrusy note continues with tangerine skin and kumquat. 98+ (ML)

Youthful and ripe ruby red in color, the 2020 Barolo Villero has a fantastic bouquet of pure ripe raspberries, wet stones, fresh roses, and sweet sage. Medium-bodied, it’s approachable up front and balanced, with refined tension through the mid-palate, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity. Weightless, with good ripeness, it’s long on the palate and has a lasting perfume of dried apricot. Absolutely lovely , it’s going to offer a wide drinking window over the next 15 or so years. (AF)

This Barolo opens up with dried flowers, bark and mushrooms, interwoven with some dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with discreet fruit that is somewhat eclipsed by the significant tannin frame that should dissolve with some bottle age. Otherwise, a solid Barolo. Best after 2027. (JGA)

This is a really enticing wine with an open and vivid nature that tells you right away it is Barolo, but it’s polished and sweetly tannic. You want to taste and taste. It’s medium- to full-bodied with rounded tannins and a savory finish. Juicy and so approachable now. Better in a couple of years, but hard to resist now. Try after 2026.
