The 2021 Barolo has a lovely, layered spice profile on the nose, with bright notes of ripe cherries, fresh flowers, anise, and juniper. It is pure and approachable upfront, with refined tannins and a medium-bodied feel, although it has good richness and elegance. It’s a very harmonious entry Barolo to drink now and over the coming 10-12 years. (AF) 92+

The 2021 Barolo is a fine introduction to this range. Aromatic and nicely layered, with fine persistence, the 2021 has a ton to offer. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, incense and dried flowers all come alive in the glass. Unlike most wines in its peer group, this mid-weight Barolo needs a bit of time in the bottle. (AG)

Notes

The 2021 Diego Conterno Barolo (DOCG) is a gorgeous, beautifully chiseled, and highly classical village wine that serves as a pristine, terroir-driven business card for Monforte d'Alba in this legendary vintage. Diego Conterno and his son, Stefano, craft this certified organic bottling from family estate plots across Monforte—including younger vines from the renowned Ginestra cru alongside San Giovanni and Bricco di Vergne. Rooted in a high-altitude mix of calcareous Formazioni di Lequio and clay-heavy Sant'Agata marls, the grapes are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel, undergoing a traditional maceration of roughly 25 to 30 days. The wine is then aged for 24 months strictly in large, neutral French oak botti, completely shunning small new barrels to allow Monforte's natural energy to drive the vintage.
