James Suckling

This has lovely aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange rind and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, tender, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive. Drink or hold.

Kerin O'Keefe

Always the most elegant of the Massolino Barolos, the fragrant 2021 Margheria stuns with enticing scents of wild roses, perfumed berries, botanical herbs and whiffs of freshly tilled soil. Classy and utterly delicious, the radiant palate is loaded with weightless finesse that wraps around raspberry compote, crushed strawberries, star anise and crushed mint while a hint of blood orange lingers on the close. Refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it beautifully balanced.

Enticing cherry and raspberry fruit is framed by rose and mineral flavors, all wrapped in a dense texture. There’s a vibrant beam of acidity, and this red is beautifully balanced and well-supported by refined tannins. Shows excellent succulence and length. Best from 2029 through 2049. 716 cases made, 150 cases imported. (BS)

Vinous

The 2021 Barolo Margheria is a brisk, vibrant young Barolo. Crushed rocks, slate, white pepper, orange peel and red-toned fruit are all nicely delineated. This is an especially lively wine for Margheria. While I appreciate its energy, the 2021 is very much on the lighter side and also a pretty big stylistic departure from the past. Expression of place is in a precarious spot.

While located firmly within Serralunga, Margheria offers a brilliant counterpoint to the commune's typical density. The soils in this MGA contain a significant streak of sand, which imparts a remarkable elegance and finesse to the finished wine. Margheria is incredibly fragrant, bursting with bright red cherry, savory herbs, and an almost ethereal floral lift. It possesses the characteristic Serralunga backbone, but wraps it in a silky, approachable texture that makes it stunningly beautiful even in its relative youth.

Notes

Massolino’s Margheria Barolo 2021 is a bold and structured expression of this historic Serralunga d’Alba cru, showcasing depth, power, and refined elegance. The nose reveals dark cherry, black plum, and dried rose, intertwined with notes of licorice, tobacco, and iron-rich earth. The palate is intense yet finely balanced, offering deep red and black fruit, firm, chiseled tannins, and a vibrant mineral core, all carried by fresh acidity. A long, commanding finish lingers with hints of balsamic, cedar, and savory spice.
