Austere and complex with stunning depth and minerality. The nose shines with clay, cured meat and a fresh, exquisite mix of sweet violets, red currants and blood oranges, as well as a subtle layer of licorice. Full-bodied and well-woven with great tannins, this is ripe, velvety and salty, showing crisp acidity and chewy character. Graphite aftertaste. Drink upon spring release, but best after 2026. (AF)

Vinous

The 2022 Barolo Mosconi is a bold, savory wine. Dried herbs, mint, incense, licorice, tobacco and spice are finely delineated. Underlying veins of tannin are classic Mosconi. The 2022 shows good site character, but it is also quite understated. There's good energy and vibrancy, though, enough to make me think all this needs is time in bottle. Bracing mineral notes extend the finish. (AG)

A total powerhouse. This is one of the most refined expressions of Mosconi we’ve seen, managing to maintain its structural presence while layering in stunning floral overtones. It is austere, complex, and driven by a massive mineral core. Notes of bright cherries, cedar, and sliced mushrooms lead into a driving, persistent finish.

Notes

The 2022 E. Pira Chiara Boschis "Mosconi" Barolo is a bold and muscular expression from a south-facing cru in Monforte d’Alba. It features an intense profile of black cherry, plum, and eucalyptus, with savory notes of rosemary and licorice. On the palate, it is deep and full-bodied, balancing its opulent fruit with dense, powerful tannins and a juicy structure that reflects the warmth of the 2022 vintage. While broader and more "masculine" than the estate's other crus, it retains a focused mineral energy and significant aging potential.
