A jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Barolo Bricco delle Viole saw one of the largest crop losses in the vintage, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of the fruit lost. Aromas of cherry cordial, framboise, preserved roses, and fresh lavender lead into a stunning palate that is pure, long, and beautifully balanced. As is often the case, this cuvée stands out in the range and may well be among the highlights of the vintage across the region. Drink 2026-2046. (AF) 98+

A very absorbing nose, showing flowers, passion fruit, sandalwood and crunchy red berries. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with a detailed, precise tannin structure and tender fruit, finishing firm and focused. From one of the higher-altitude crus in Barolo. This needs two to three years to soften. Better from 2029. (JGA)

The 2022 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is fragrant and utterly delicious. It opens with aromas of cake spice, baked plum, wild cherry and new leather. On the bold, enveloping palate, velvety tannins accompany succulent Marasca cherry, licorice, tobacco and vanilla before a blood orange finish. Tangy acidity keeps it lifted. (KO)

Always the last to be picked, GD Vajra’s Bricco delle Viole was brought in between 5–12 October – decidedly early for this cool site. It was a bit stern and closed when I tried it, with raspberry and macerated cherry eventually giving way to dark florals. Those lovely violet, lilac and delicate alpine blossoms build with ethereal intensity. Similarly tight, the palate comes across as slender, accentuating its structure, but deftly chiselled tannins have nothing to be ashamed of in this precisely constructed gem. Underlying vibrancy and finesse prevail. (MM)

The undisputed flagship. Situated at one of the highest elevations in the entire Barolo zone, it effortlessly defies the warmth of the vintage. It is a masterpiece of elegance, offering soaring violet aromatics, pristine red fruit, and supreme longevity.

Notes

The 2022 G.D. Vajra "Bricco delle Viole" Barolo is the majestic, undisputed crown jewel of the Vajra lineup. Perched at one of the highest elevations in the commune of Barolo (up to 480 meters), this historic vineyard looks directly at the Alps, benefiting from brilliant morning sun and cool mountain drafts. In the dry, sun-drenched 2022 vintage, Bricco delle Viole’s old vines and high-altitude marls acted as a natural buffer, yielding a wine of profound structural integrity, aristocratically dialed-back fruit, and unparalleled vertical tension. The vinification is traditionally uncompromised, utilizing a very patient, gentle 40 to 50-day maceration before a long, slow maturation in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks to safeguard the site’s crystalline purity. In the glass, it shows a luminous, translucent ruby-garnet color. The nose is an absolute masterclass in ethereal complexity, requiring a few swirls to unleash an intellectual beam of fresh sour cherries, pomegranate, and blood orange rind. This primary fruit is seamlessly woven into the vineyard's signature perfume: fresh lavender, dried rose petals, white pepper, and an incredibly deep, cool layer of graphite, anise, and wet flint.
