This great bottle comes from the far northern edge of Champagne in the Massif St-Thierry, north of Reims. All of the vines for this 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Meunier cuvée come from Cormincy, the last village in Champagne before the flats facing out towards the Ardennes. As one would expect from a Blanc de Noir, this is a full-bodied wine with plenty of savory red fruit flavor. Due to its far northern provenance, this Champagne also has great snap and refreshment to balance out its power. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

This fantastic wine comes from vines of over 40 years old on the Coutelas estate. It is composed of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 30% Meunier and aged for four years on the lees. They only use the first press or "cuvée" in this blend, and dose it low at 7 grams per liter. It is a zesty style, framed by warm baguette toast that finishes dry and surprisingly long. It makes a great aperitif! -Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

92 points John Gilman: "The 2019 Mourvèdre from Skinner Vineyards comes in at 13.5 percent alcohol and is raised entirely in used French oak casks during its elevage. The wine is impressively transparent in profile and offers up a lovely aromatic constellation of pomegranate, dark berries, pepper, smoked meats, a fine base of soil, cigar smoke and incipient notes of cola in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and peppery, with a good core, fine mineral drive and grip, ripe tannins and fine balance on the long, focused and youthfully complex finish. This is a very fine example of mourvèdre." (10/2021) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This handsomely oaked wine sprinkles ginger, cinnamon and clove over ripe and vibrant black-cherry flavors that are wrapped in moderate tannins for a grippy mouthfeel. Tempting now for its warm spices and deep fruit, it will be best from 2024. (JG) " (01/2021)

Bidaia translates to “the journey” in Basque – a fitting name for Xabi Urruzola and Garazi del Rey, high-school sweethearts who have traveled the world together and ended back in their home of Getariako, Spain. Together, they grow the local varietals Hondarabbi Zuri and Hondarabbi Beltza on their 8.5-hectare property, where they also make the wine on site. They also own a small restaurant in their 15th century cider-house where locals fill the seats every weekend to enjoy Basque food and wine. The 2024 Getariako Txakolina is a blend of Hondarribi Zuri, Grose Manseng and Petit Corbou, made in a very traditional style to the region. Harvested early, the grapes are fermented in tank and bottled with a touch of lingering carbon dioxide, leading to a low-alcohol (this wine clocks in at just 10.5% alcohol) and distinctly fizzy style of wine that is a joy to drink. Equally zesty and quaffable, this wine is the perfect pairing for the famous pintxos (tapas) of the Basque region. It also is light and refreshing enough to have on its own.

The 2019 Plozza Rosso di Valtellina is a bright, "mountain Nebbiolo" (locally called Chiavennasca) that offers a more immediate and rustic charm compared to the heavyweights of the region. The nose is expressive and slightly "wild," featuring strawberry and red cherry layered with notes of violet, dried herbs, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, it is light-to-medium bodied with lifted acidity and ripe, dusty tannins. It is often described as a "vin sauvage" (wild wine) with a savory, dry finish and a distinct mineral edge from the rocky Alpine terraces.

Eric Guido writes in Vinous: "Caves de Donnas may be a co-op winery, but it's also one of the top producers in Valle d'Aosta. The winery produces a small portfolio that is all focused on Nebbiolo (referred to as Picotendro in these parts). Here in the southern tip of Valle d'Aosta, at around 300 meters and all from steep, terraced vineyards, Nebbiolo takes on a more alpine inspired personality, becoming a bit more peppery and floral, yet still with the depth that you'd expect from the variety." The 2024 Erste + Neue Kalterersee Classico Superiore is a quintessential Alpine red from Alto Adige, celebrating the Schiava (Vernatsch) grape grown on the sunny slopes surrounding Lake Caldaro. On the palate, it is light-bodied, "crunchy," and incredibly smooth. It balances juicy fruit with a refreshing, saline acidity and very soft tannins, making it remarkably easy to drink.

"Domaine Charles Père et Fils traces its roots back to 1900, when the family first planted vines in Burgundy. In 1980, François Charles’ son, Pascal Charles, joined the domaine and helped guide its modern evolution. Today, Pascal runs the estate alongside his daughter Pauline, continuing the family’s winemaking tradition across roughly 14 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, with holdings in Pommard, Volnay, and Meursault. Their "Les Vignes de Deffend" comes from a 1.5-hectare vineyard with vines averaging 35-40 years of age. The parcel is sustainably farmed to ensure the healthiest possible fruit, which is hand-harvested, partially destemmed (50%), and aged for one year in seasoned French oak barrels. The wine is an absolute delight, opening with beautiful aromas of white peach and delicate white flowers. On the palate, it expands with vibrant orchard fruit and subtle spice, carried by impressive balance and texture. As the wine unfolds, layers of complexity emerge, finishing with a long, lingering note of fruit, crushed stone, and gentle spice. Fans of white Burgundy will find much to love here and will appreciate the reminder that excellent white Burgundy doesn’t have to break the bank." - Alex Pross, Burgundy Buyer

92 points Descorchados : "This is a blend of vineyards, including two-thirds from vines about 20 years old in the Los Lingues zone, towards the foothills of the Andes in Colchagua, and one-third from the Marchigüe zone, also in Colchagua, but further west. The combination of the herbal and fruity notes with the fierce tannins from Marchigüe's granitic soils gives rise to a wine that’s fruity and fluid, yet has enough body for charcuterie. The 2024 Riff Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is a crisp, certified organic white curated by the legendary Alois Lageder. The wine features a brilliant straw-yellow color with green tints and a fine, fruity nose of green apple, white peach, and citrus zest. On the palate, it is light-to-medium bodied and remarkably precise, balancing juicy orchard fruit with a vibrant, saline minerality and a dry, mouth-watering finish. Vinified entirely in stainless steel with four months on the fine lees, it maintains a clean, high-energy profile that makes it an ideal aperitif or companion for fresh seafood and light pasta dishes.

92-94 points Vinous: "Meant to be an entry-level wine, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is positively stellar. Black cherry, gravel, lavender, mocha, licorice and spice are all dialed up. (AG)" (01/2025) 92 points James Suckling: " A hearty, structured and vibrant red with the classic cabernet aromas of black cherries and blackcurrants on a firm, full texture. The Trilogie comes from one big foudre, a couple demi-muid (600 liter barrels) and a very small stainless steel tank. It is 1/3 each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier, with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wood fermented and the Meunier done in tank. All of Vivien Lamoureux's 30 acres are in the village of Les Riceys, in the southern part of the Aube department, just 3 miles from the border with Burgundy. Here the soil is Kimmeridgian clay, almost identical to Chablis and the climate is much more continental than in the Marne department. The colder winters and hotter summers make Pinot Noir the grape of choice here spring frost is too much of a threat for Chardonnay in most places, and plenty of summer sun gets the late ripening (at least here in Champagne!) Pinot Noir nicely mature. There is almost no Meunier planted here, but Vivien has a small plot for this special wine. La Antigua “Clásico” Crianza Rioja is one of winemaker Alberto Orte’s most enduring history projects and one that shows off an unexplored region of Rioja Alta: the western mountain range of Sierra de la Demanda, south of the Ebro River. Inspired by a style of winemaking that was popular in the first half of the 20th century, Alberto’s winemaking emphasizes freshness and minerality over oak-derived richness, leading to balanced, long-lived wines. This wine is made from 70% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano, and 10% Garnacha, all planted between 1940 and 1955. The north-facing, high-altitude vineyards here receive less sunshine than those in the valley, resulting in grapes that ripen slowly, showcasing intense flavors of greater balance and focus. This poses quite a risk that only hands-on viticulture can remedy, as this area is one of the last to harvest in all of Western Europe, usually in early November! In addition to the cool climate, Sierra de la Demanda’s vineyards are very steep and impossible to mechanize, so all vineyard work must be done by hand. The wine is matured for 24 months in stainless steel tanks, followed by 24 months in old, neutral French and American oak barrels, exceeding the minimum requirements for a Crianza Rioja. The result is a handcrafted wine of precision and elegance – fresh and beautiful to drink now, with added longevity for those with the patience to wait.

91 points, Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2018 Lilian Ladouys is such a gorgeous wine. Black cherry, gravel, scorched earth, leather and dark spice give the 2018 a brooding aromatic profile that suggests a potent wine. On the palate, though, the Lilian Ladouys is quite a bit more restrained than the bouquet indicates, in a good way. The 2018 is wonderfully deep and fleshy, but not at all heavy, with a natural sense of radiance that complements the more rustic leanings of Saint-Estèphe. There is plenty of pleasure to be found here. In a word: terrific." (3/2021)
