Reviewed October 2021
The 2019 Mourvèdre from Skinner Vineyards comes in at 13.5 percent alcohol and is raised entirely in used French oak casks during its elevage. The wine is impressively transparent in profile and offers up a lovely aromatic constellation of pomegranate, dark berries, pepper, smoked meats, a fine base of soil, cigar smoke and incipient notes of cola in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and peppery, with a good core, fine mineral drive and grip, ripe tannins and fine balance on the long, focused and youthfully complex finish. This is a very fine example of mourvèdre.

This handsomely oaked wine sprinkles ginger, cinnamon and clove over ripe and vibrant black-cherry flavors that are wrapped in moderate tannins for a grippy mouthfeel. Tempting now for its warm spices and deep fruit, it will be best from 2024. (JG)
