Boulard-Bauquaire "Carte Noire" Brut Blanc de Noirs Champagne

50% Pinot Noir and 50% Pinot Meunier, this is one of the finest examples of Blanc de Noirs on our shelves. On the palate, this champagne has notes of blood orange, raspberry, red apple, lemons, and almonds, with great acidity and an apple driven finish. The first wine I would point out to a customer inquiring about Blanc de Noirs, especially at this awesome price point.

Lovely and toasty, round, and big-bodied—everything you want from a Blanc de Noirs. Red apple, brioche, and a hint of strawberry lead into a generous, full palate with real weight and presence. The richness is balanced by enough freshness to keep it lively through the finish. A crowd-pleasing, food-loving Champagne and one of the best values in the case.

There's this super pretty ripe raspberry note that just won't leave me alone when I smell this, and I'm here for it. There's some blood orange, red apple, lemon flower, and lemon zest accompanying that raspberry on its wild ride up into my nose. The palate has really excellent breadth, spreading deliciously everywhere very bright high toned reds, little flashes here and there, and then there's the more classic red apple and lemon that dominate the palate and more than enough acidity to push this along the palate, a very appley finish lingers and lasts most pleasantly. Very good, but I already knew that, Boulard Bauquaire is always good.

Refreshing and deep in equal measure, the Boulard-Bauquaire "Carte Noire" entices with its nose of cherries, strawberries, and almonds. Flavors of black cherry and fresh herbs mingle together to create a deep, complex impression. The robust carbonation of this champagne gives a lifted feeling to the long finish. This is a full-bodied, rich, tasty bottle, and such an interesting counterpoint to their blanc de blancs.

Notes

This great bottle comes from the far northern edge of Champagne in the Massif St-Thierry, north of Reims. All of the vines for this 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Meunier cuvée come from Cormincy, the last village in Champagne before the flats facing out towards the Ardennes. As one would expect from a Blanc de Noir, this is a full-bodied wine with plenty of savory red fruit flavor. Due to its far northern provenance, this Champagne also has great snap and refreshment to balance out its power. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer
