Rendez-Vous Côtes-du-Rhône Villages by K&L Wine Merchants
2024 Rendez-Vous Côtes-du-Rhône Villages by K&L Wine Merchants

Welcome to "Rendez-Vous," our newest K&L private label. This latest addition to our lineup fulfills the promise K&L has always strives to deliver: exceptional quality wines that reflect the authenticity of their place, producer, and varieties - all at a price that makes sense. This inaugural release comes from our longtime friends in the Southern Rhône, Dauvergne et Ranvier. While they farm excellent holdings throughout the region, this particular blend is sourced from the more prestigious Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation. A step above standard Côtes du Rhône, these higher-ranked sites produce fruit at lower yields, resulting in greater concentration and character. After a series of blending trials, we landed on a beautifully Syrah-dominant cuvée. Composed of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, it captures all the inviting hallmarks of a classic Rhône blend, delivering vibrant red fruit and layered spice with impressive depth and approachability.

Domaine Durieu "Lucile Avril" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
2022 Domaine Durieu "Lucile Avril" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
97JS
94JD
91RP

Two estates became one in the 1970s on the marriage of the Avril and Durieu families. The Châteauneuf holdings belonged to the Avril side and many of the vines date back before the first world war. This cuvée is primarily Grenache with a small amount of Syrah and Mourvèdre rounding out the blend. The vines are on the famous galets soils (the big pudding stones) that make the region so famous. The grapes are all manually harvested with no destemming. The Grenache and Mourvèdre are aged in concrete tanks and the Syrah sees new oak for 12 months. The blend is a seamless expression of classic Châteauneuf flavors laced with gorgeous structure.

Domaine de l'Amandine Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Séguret
2023 Domaine de l'Amandine Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Séguret
90DC

L'Amandine was established in 1968 by Jean-Pierre Verdeau who followed the tradition of winemaking in his family. Born in the region, Jean-Pierre continues to work in the vineyards and is now joined by his son-in-law, Alex Suter (whose father was the vineyard manager of Rustenberg winery in South Africa.) They work together to build on the successes of the past and look to the future. Séguret is one of the most picturesque villages in the southern Rhône, built into the hillside and overlooking the surrounding vines. The soils are made up of primarily clay and sandstone with limestone scree scattered throughout the vineyards. The winery still uses the concrete tanks that Jean-Pierre installed by hand back in the day with a few new ones added as they have slowly expanded their holdings. The Séguret is made up of Syrah and Grenache, is destemmed and is aged all in concrete tanks. The results are a bright, fleshy red-fruited wine that shows great purity and the typicity of this lovely region.

Lauded as some of the most cellar-worthy wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pegau is famed for its old school and classic profile. According to Robert Parker: "One of the bastions of traditionalism in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is Domaine de Pegau, long owned by the Feraud family, and now run by the charming, talented Laurence, who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father, Paul. This nearly 50-acre estate fashions some of the longest-lived, most interesting wines of the appellation."

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over his father’s vineyards in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Today, the estate is led by the sibling team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, with Isabelle serving as the head winemaker and guiding the cellar with a meticulous, terroir-driven approach. The domaine’s holdings span a mosaic of soils - from the sandy, pebble-strewn sites of Chapouin and La Janasse to the red clay and galets roulés of La Crau - giving their wines a distinctive blend of power, depth, and elegance. In the cellar, Isabelle employs a mix of traditional and modern techniques, including hand-harvesting, partial whole-cluster fermentations, long macerations, and aging in both large foudres and barrels. Under her direction, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark estates, celebrated for wines that marry purity and precision with the region’s signature richness. The Chaupin is from a 7 hectare parcel, composed of 100% Grenache from vines first planted in 1912. There is some whole cluster fermentation and the wine is aged in a mix of mostly foudre with about 1/3 in demi-muid. This is one of the icon Grenache wines from the region.

Mas de Libian "Bout d'Zan" Côtes-du-Rhône
2024 Mas de Libian "Bout d'Zan" Côtes-du-Rhône

The Thibon family acquired the Libian property in 1670, and in 1970 Jean-Pierre Thibon decided to wholly focus on wine production. Since then the estate has grown to 25 hectares of vineyards and 8 hectares of "nourishing" land planted to olive trees, vegetable and flower gardens, and grains to support the organic and biodynamic viticulture. Mas de Libian began its biodynamic farming in 2005 and was shortly certified by Demeter afterwards. The "Bout d'Zan" translates to "blame it of Zan," which playfully uses Jean-Pierre's childhood nickname referring to his small frame and tanned skin. It is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah grown on clay-limestone soils. All grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation is powered by native yeasts and the wine ages for 9 months in large oak barrels. Full of bright red fruit flavors, this is fresh and inviting and the perfect introduction to this exciting producer. *Biodynamic*

Still light/medium gold in color, it offers classic crushed-rock-like minerality, licorice, charcoal and sautéed peach characteristics to go with a lively, fresh, yet full-bore and decadent profile on the palate. Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Hermitage Ex Voto, whose fate is still a little unknown as it might be declassified into the straight Hermitage, shows the more forward, charming nature of the vintage with its sweet bouquet of cassis, black raspberries, licorice and vanilla bean. Big, rich, full-bodied and sexy with ripe tannin, it will be approachable in its youth and have two to three decades of longevity. One of the highlight tastings during my two weeks spent working in the northern Rhône was with Philippe and Marcel Guigal, who in this critic’s opinion, consistently fashion some of the greatest wines in the world. Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

94-96VN

99 points Wine Advocate: "Chave’s 2023 Hermitage is elegant and expressive, well suited to the character of the vintage, revealing aromas of sweet dark berries, incense, violet, dark cherries and tapenade. Full-bodied, satiny and suave, deep and concentrated, it’s pure and seamless, built around ultra-refined tannins for such a young Hermitage, with lively acidity lending tension and freshness, concluding with a long, perfumed and persistent finish. Remarkably accessible in its youth, it nonetheless warrants extended cellaring; the particular profile of the vintage appears especially well adapted to this cuvée and should permit long aging while preserving its aromatic expansiveness. (YC)" (05/2025) 96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As always, I was able to taste the 2023 Hermitage from multiple parcels, and it's clear this will be another beautiful Hermitage. The Péléat, which comes from sandier soils, is always more finesse-oriented. The Beaume lieu-dit brings more complexity and spice, the L'Ermite more minerality and rose petal nuances, and the Bessards always brings the granitic, graphite, structured core that defines this cuvée. I love the overall purity, elegance, and finesse of the 2023, which is a slight throwback to ripe, yet very classic, mineral-driven examples of Chave's Hermitage. It will offer some early enjoyment given its ripe style, yet the minerality and structure all point to it having ample longevity." (05/2025) 97 points Decanter: "A tasting of constituent barrels suggests this will be a particularly approachable and supple vintage of Chave's Hermitage - it is a vintage without great tannic mass or strong acidity, but has deliciously ripe Méal fruit. Very elegant, if fairly low in tannin compared to a typical year, this will drink well young, starting at around 2036 really, but will be approachable, if less rewarding, earlier than that. It will drink before the 2022, and probably not last as long. (MW)" (09/2024) 94-96 points Vinous: "The 2023 L'Hermitage is hauntingly floral at this early stage, with captivating aromatics of rose petal, crushed violet, sour cherry, red plum, cedar and a delicate hint of orange blossom. As usual, Chave showcased individual lieux-dits, with Les Beaumes standing out this year for its lively energy and laser-like precision. That said, the wine’s core pillars, Les Bessards and L’Ermite, are marked by outstanding purity. While the 2023 eventually may not match the concentration or sheer impact of the 2022, it might reveal hidden surprises as it develops further. (NG)" (11/2024)

It's medium to full-bodied, round, incredibly pure, and seamless on the palate, with a supple, vibrant texture and a gorgeous finish. This is an absolute lights-out Hermitage Blanc that I wish every reader could taste. I love it even today, yet it's going to cruise in cold cellars for at least two decades. " (02/2026) 96 points Vinous: "The 2023 L'Hermitage Blanc shines with immaculate balance and harmony, smoothing over the summer heatwave of the growing season without any hint of flamboyance. Instead, it delivers outstanding freshness and verve, with pronounced notes of honeysuckle, fresh pear, yellow apple, wet stone and delicate chamomile. Broad-shouldered, concentrated and sapid, the 2023 is such a gorgeous and masterfully assembled white L'Hermitage. (NG)" (01/2026) 96 points Decanter: "A tasting of the Péléat and Les Rocoules vineyards behind this wine points to an expressive, juicy, relatively soft and juicy style of white Hermitage this year. It’s likely to be a relatively supple vintage, with gentle acidity and rich fruit. (MW)" (09/2024)

98 points Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape is an awesome example of elegance combined with extraordinary power. The alcohol levels must be between 15.5% and 16%, but the elegance and sublime nature of this wine make it irresistible. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of framboise, black cherry liqueur intermixed with blacker fruits, licorice and a hint of flowers. Pure with terrific layers of fruit concentration (although it's remarkably light on its feet), silky tannins, well-integrated acidity and a stunning personality, this monumental Rayas is breathtaking. This beauty will undoubtedly be drinkable early on (although Emmanuel Reynaud considers that to be infanticide), and it is capable of lasting 25-30 years. (RP)" (10/2011) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve from Rayas is a beauty that shows the hallmark elegance and complexity of this estate paired with plenty of opulence and sweet fruit. Incredible Provençal notes of kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, framboise, and flowery incense all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, has sweet tannins, and an almost over-the-top personality that’s a joy to drink. It’s impossible to resist today yet will evolve for 25-30 years or more. This comes closest in my mind to the 2007 with its opulent, sexy style." (02/2020) 97 points Vinous: "The 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the third Rayas to blow our minds. Stunning delineation on the nose, this offers layers of red fruit, menthol, lavender oil and rosemary, the fruit just a notch darker than the 2005 alongside. The palate is perfectly balanced with a hint of Lapsang Souchong, fanning out gloriously towards a finish that shows disarming tenderness and restraint. I am utterly smitten by its elegance. Why are not more Châteauneufs like this? (NM)" (07/2023) 96 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "(basically 100% grenache): Deep red with a bright rim. A kaleidoscopic bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, blood orange and lavender, with deeper cherry pit and licorice qualities adding power. Sweet, expansive and pure, offering intense raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors supported by a firm spine of acidity. Shows excellent clarity and power on the finish, which is given shape by fine-grained, sweet tannins. I underestimated this wine from barrel last year. (JR)" (01/2012)

97 points James Suckling: "Dense licorice and forest berry aromas mask the deep tannin structure of this Chateauneuf-du-Pape masterpiece. Full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage. Serious tannins in the very long, compact and refined finish. From organically grown grapes. (SP)" (04/2025) 96 points Decanter: "A tasting of the constituent parts this year, so this is a provisional score. The Terret Noir, Muscardin and Vaccarèse were fermented together; they provide the more fragrant top notes, bright and attractive if not deep. The Cinsault was perfumed and fresh, with fine tannins. The Counoise was more savoury, with more depth and tannin; tense and saline, and spicy thanks to 50% whole-bunch fermentation. The Grenache was soft and supple, fairly dark in colour, quite structured, with impressive freshness, tannins and acidity. The Syrah was deep, intense, black-fruited and peppery - quite potent in alcohol, with intense tannins. The Mourvèdre will be 30% of the blend, contributing mouthcoating, deep and succulent tannins, plenty of flesh and quite high alcohol. (MW)" (09/2024) 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The estate lost some Grenache due to shatter, so the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 10% Syrah, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It was all destemmed except for the Syrah and brought up in foudre. The higher Mourvèdre component gives it a more serious, focused style than most in the vintage, and it has darker blackberry fruits intermixed with roasted herbs, spring flowers, violets, and some meaty nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a deep, pure, layered mouthfeel, it has ripe, velvety, yet building tannins and a great finish. Another beautiful vintage for this cuvée, it has the approachable style of the vintage yet brings more than enough density and concentration to evolve for 30 years. " (11/2025) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Dark and dense, showing real power and concentration. Offers more than just ripe fruit, with violet, blackberry and plum cruising alongside black pepper, salt-cured meat, toasted spices and a ballast of solid iron. Gutsy in feel, with pleasing chewiness, this ripples with energy through the youthfully tight finish. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Bourboulenc, Picardan and Roussanne. Best from 2027 through 2040. (K.B.)" (01/2026) 94 points Wine Advocate: "As usual, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Château de Beaucastel was matured in foudres. Wafting from the glass with aromas of pepper, garrigue, dark berries and flowers, it’s medium- to full-bodied, round and sappy, with a layered core of fruit and a dense, precise mid-palate framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a firmer, gently spicy finish. (YC)" (10/2025) 93 points Vinous: "The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows well, unwinding with intense blackberry, black cherry and licorice aromatics. Silky and elegant, it hits the full-bodied palate with energy and drive, coming to a close with freshness and focus on the rounded finish. This classy red Châteauneuf can be approached as of 2026. (NG)" (10/2025) Jancis Robinson: "Beautiful nose of liquorice and spice with garrigue and wild and spiced notes as well. Fascinating to taste these component parts and to see what adds to the blend. I expect this to all blend beautifully, with a suppleness and finesse to it. Expect a very, very good Beaucastel from 2023. 17.5/20 points (AC) " (10/2024)

Château Gigognan "Clos du Roi" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
2020 Château Gigognan "Clos du Roi" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

91VN

Like many great estates, Château Gigognan has a long and storied past. The roots of the vineyards date back to the time of the Romans. Bishop Geoffroy of Avignon even had a hand in the estate in the twelfth century. The property's modern history began when Anne and Jacques Callet purchased the Clos du Roi domaine and began restoring the château. All through the 1990s, the Callets worked to rebuild the property and create a better-equipped cellar. As of 2009, the winery has been certified organic. In 2012, Philippe Cambie came on board to consult with the winemaking and rework some of the vineyard plantings. Jacques Callet passed away in July of 2016, and the property was purchased by Jean-Francois Henin in 2017. A new era began, and even greater restoration has taken place. A whole new production facility has been added, and winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt now leads the charge to establish the winery as one of the most exciting in the region. The "Clos du Roi" is primarily one large parcel with just a few tiny satellite parcels. Planted over galets (the classic round white stones of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), the terroir is located in the southern and driest part of the appellation. Composed of primarily Grenache and Syrah, the wine is aged in a mix of stainless steel and older wood. It is a pure and expressive version of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a welcome addition to our Direct Import program.

Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2010 Michel Gassier "Cercius" Côtes-du-Rhône Vieilles Vignes (93RP, 92JD). Wine Advocate: "Wow, is this an exciting wine! This sensational wine tastes more like Chateauneuf du Pape than just about any Cotes du Rhone one is likely to find. It is also another example of what looks to be another great vintage emerging from the southern Rhone – 2010. This is one of the greatest Cotes du Rhones I have ever tasted – wonderfully intense, deep ruby with some purple tinges, with a stunning nose of black raspberry liqueur intermixed with sweet cherries, licorice, pepper and Provencal lavender. Round, generous, opulent and heady, this fabulously intense, hedonistic wine should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. Bravo! (RP)" (06/2011)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 M. Chapoutier "De L'Orée" Ermitage Blanc (99RP, 94JD, 93WE). Wine Advocate: "The awesome 1999 Ermitage Cuvee de l'Oree flirts with perfection. It is full-bodied, with an incredible bouquet of liquid minerals, licorice, honeysuckle, citrus, and a hint of tropical fruits. One-hundred percent new oak aging has been completely absorbed by the wine's fruit and glycerin. This is a winemaking tour de force, made from exceedingly low yields of 12-15 hectoliters per hectare (less than one ton of fruit per acre). However, readers should understand that these are often unusual wines to drink because they tend to show exceptionally well for 4-5 years after bottling, then close up until about age 12. They can last for 4-5 decades. (RP)" (04/2002)

Int'l Wine Review: "The 2015 'Cuvée da Capo' is absolutely stunning in this vintage. It is composed of 70% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre along with 20% other authorized varietals. As this sensational red begins to unwind it releases an incredibly complex aromatic profile starting ripe black cherries, dark plums and raspberry coulis followed by violets, smoke, garrigue, black olives and savory herbs which all come together beautifully. On the palate this possesses a gorgeous full body, with a remarkably rich, seamless texture that is backed with velvety tannins and remarkable overall concentration and depth.

It's medium-bodied with fine tannins. Superb texture and balance here with a long, succulent and vivid finish. Drink or hold." (04/2025) 91 points Vinous: "The 2023 Crozes-Hermitage comes out shining, opening with dried violets, orange rind and ripe red fruits. Delicately assertive fleshy tones add more complexity. Midweighted and refined, the 2023 surpasses the 2022 by a landslide, doubling down with accentuated freshness on the savoury finale. (NG)" (01/2026)

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Beautiful red and blue fruits, violets, leather, peppery herbs, and bouquet garni notes all emerge from the 2023 Saint Joseph, a medium to full-bodied effort that has a round, supple, pure style. It has ripe, polished tannins and a seamless, layered profile that's going to shine for two decades, if not more. Although I love it today, it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. " (02/2026) 93 points Wine Advocate: "Perfumed and approachable, the 2023 Saint-Joseph from Jean-Louis Chave is superb, revealing aromas of iris, violet, dark berries and fresh fruit mingled with a subtle menthol nuance. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and supple, it’s textured and precise, built around a core of fruit with good depth, framed by velvety tannins and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Combining tension with a velvety profile, this is a particularly successful rendition. (YC)" (05/2026) 93 points Vinous: "Vinified with roughly 30% whole clusters, the 2023 Saint-Joseph reveals first impressions of highly fragrant orange blossom, dried violets and red cherry inflections. Midweight, round and refined, the markedly fresh 2023 can be enjoyed right out of the gate and I doubt it will ever close down. (NG)" (01/2026) 93 points Decanter: "A tasting of the constituent parts suggests that this will be an elegant, refined style of vintage without a big tannic frame. Acidity will be softer, more lactic than a typical year. Should drink well early and isn't likely to be one of the longest-lived vintages of this cuvée. (MW)" (09/2024)

Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas
2022 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas
91-93JD
89-92VN

91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled, the 2022 Gigondas Ventabren is based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault. It has a terrific nose of exotic red fruits, minty garrigue, and rose/floral nuances. This carries to a medium-bodied, elegant 2022 that has ripe, polished tannins, good balance, and outstanding length. It clearly leans into the fresher, more sappy, borderline green end of the spectrum, yet it holds it together and is beautiful." (12/2024) 89-92 points Vinous: "Moderately intense red fruits introduce the 2022 Gigondas La Cuvée Ventabren. More meaty and traditionally styled than the La Cuvée Tradition from the same vintage, it lacks a little charm on this occasion. Fingers crossed that the bottled wine will be a little bit more inviting than this barrel sample. (NG) " (09/2023) Jancis Robinson: "Tasted blind. Pepper and leather notes on the nose. The palate has a sweetness as well as a floral character. The tannins are present and really well managed – fine-grained and delicate yet still with a firmness and grip. Red fruit-led, tinned strawberry and liquorice, with a ripe and layered finish. Impressive and shows real finesse. (AC) 17/20"

Domaine Cécile Chassagne Gigondas
2023 Domaine Cécile Chassagne Gigondas
92JD

Named for the family's second-generation winemaker, Cécile Chassagne took over the vineyard in Gigondas that had been originally planted by her father in 1970. This blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah is made in a traditional method without destemming. A long fermentation in open-topped wood tanks is followed by aging the wine for four months in large Allier oak casks. The resulting wine is a medium-bodied, meaty, and elegant expression of Gigondas terroir.

Romain Roche took over the family property from his father Marcel in 2009. Romain is known for expressing the typicity of Cairanne and has become one of the key producers synonymous with the region. Roche has worked sustainably since he started the winery and has recently finished the organic conversion process. La Bousquette is a true gem of a vineyard over 80+ years of age located on the terroir known as "La Montagne". This single parcel is planted to Grenache and Carignan on gray clay and gravel limestone soils. All grapes are hand harvested, and each varietal is fermented and aged in concrete tanks to preserve the character of the vineyard and the fruit. Jean-Baptiste Meunier represents the fifth generation of winemakers at Moulin de la Gardette in Gigondas. We've worked with this producer since the mid-1990s, and these wines remain among our favorites from the region. Gigondas has emerged from the shadow of neighboring Châteauneuf-du-Pape, creating wines of distinctive intensity and flavor. The appellation's south-facing slopes, higher elevations, and varied soils help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" blends Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah from vines averaging 50-60 years old. Aged approximately 18 months in mostly used foudre and demi-muid before bottling. (Keith Mabry, K&L Rhône Buyer) *Organic*

Thierry Allemand "R" Reynard Cornas

96-98JD

96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming mostly from older vines in the Reynard lieu-dit, the 2023 Cornas Reynard is darker and more mineral-driven, offering loads of violets, cassis, and graphite aromatics. Full-bodied, balanced, and serious on the palate, it delivers incredible purity and finesse, with a finish that won't quit. This is a profound, age-worthy Cornas that's probably the Cornas of the vintage. I'm always amazed how this estate marries the inherent wildness of Syrah grown on this steep, granite slope with incredible finesse and elegance, which I think is the hallmark of Allemand." (05/2025) 98 points Wine Advocate: "One of the finest wines crafted by Thierry Allemand, the 2023 Cornas Reynard wafts from the glass with aromas of mulberries, blueberries, violet, rose and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s seamless and concentrated, built around a tensile, precise core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. This is a bottle that Northern Rhône lovers will want to have in the cellar. (YC)" (05/2026)

93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from younger vines and a mix of terroirs, the 2023 Cornas Chaillot reveals beautiful red and blue fruits, violets, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, it shows remarkable purity and a juicy, elegant character, with plenty of ripe tannins and a beautiful sense of finesse. This clearly outstanding Cornas shows the softer, finesse-driven style of the vintage and I suspect will shine right out of the gate yet also evolve gracefully." (05/2025) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Notes of mulberries, violet and blueberry mingled with subtle carnal nuances preface the 2023 Cornas Les Chaillots, a medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured wine with a tensile, vibrant profile framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal, violet-inflected finish. Produced at a yield of 32 hectoliters per hectare—a healthy figure for the estate - it will require patience in the cellar. (YC)" (05/2026) Drink Rhone: "Bright red; has a leafy toned nose, springy red berry, herbs, a little vegetal presence, sprinkle. The palate serves a direct offer of red fruit, crisp-rocky tannins from the mid-point – they prevail on the close. It has sound spine, is droit-linear, the red fruit/juice capable of moving forward with time. It’s quite streamlined, naked, has a smoky raspberry-herbal flavour. ****"

Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes
2023 Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes
94JD
90VN

Domaine Saint-Damien is a historic family estate in Gigondas, farmed by the Saurel family since the early 19th century and now led by Romain Saurel, with organic certification since 2012. Their vineyards span several key parcels, including Les Souteyrades, La Louisiane, Le Gravas, and Clos de la Marquise, each offering a distinct expression of the appellation. These sites feature varied limestone- and clay-rich soils and a high proportion of old-vine Grenache, often complemented by Mourvèdre. In the cellar, traditional concrete fermentations and élevage in large foudres emphasize structure, freshness, and the savory garrigue character typical of top Gigondas. The Vieilles Vignes bottling is sourced from the lower terraces of Gigondas, where rocky alluvial soils contribute both power and lift. The blend is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre from vines averaging 40 years of age, including Grenache planted in 1964 and Mourvèdre planted in 1977. The wine is co-fermented with an extended five-week maceration in concrete tanks to build structure and depth, followed by 12 months of aging in large oak foudres. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve purity and site expression.
