The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Roi is also beautiful, with pure strawberry and framboise-like fruit as well as sappy flowers and peppery garrigue nuances. It's pure, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, with terrific tannins. This blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre is going to drink nicely for a good decade.

In spite of the generous richness and creaminess, this is quite a discreet Chateauneuf with ripe red-fruit aromas, plus notes of cocoa and milk chocolate, as well as damson plum and a touch of balsamic vinegar. The long, complex and spicy finish suggests this is just beginning a long life. A cuvee of grenache, syrah and mourvedre that was matured in oak. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (SP)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Roi is showing beautifully. It opens in the glass with aromas of red fruits, tomato leaf, garrigue and a pinch of iodine. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and framed by smooth tannins, this 2020 is well-balanced by refreshing acidity and closes with a savory finish. (NG)

Gigognan continues to be one of the most satisfying Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings at one of the most accessible price points in the appellation. Drawn from classic galets roulés soils, the wine shows a natural depth and warmth of fruit, layering black currant, fig jam, and mulled strawberry. Subtle hints of graphite and a touch of garrigue herb bring that unmistakable terroir signature, balancing beautifully with the wine’s generous, forward-fruited character. We first brought in the 2016 Gigognan, which remains one of our best-selling Châteauneufs of all time. Not much has changed stylistically since then—except for even greater precision and attention in the vineyards. The 2020 is a clear callback to that benchmark vintage, offering the same depth and structure with just a touch more lift and freshness. This is a project I continue to believe in, and it’s been a pleasure watching the wines evolve and refine themselves over the past half-decade.

Notes

Like many great estates, Château Gigognan has a long and storied past. The roots of the vineyards date back to the time of the Romans. Bishop Geoffroy of Avignon even had a hand in the estate in the twelfth century. The property's modern history began when Anne and Jacques Callet purchased the Clos du Roi domaine and began restoring the château. All through the 1990s, the Callets worked to rebuild the property and create a better-equipped cellar. As of 2009, the winery has been certified organic. In 2012, Philippe Cambie came on board to consult with the winemaking and rework some of the vineyard plantings. Jacques Callet passed away in July of 2016, and the property was purchased by Jean-Francois Henin in 2017. A new era began, and even greater restoration has taken place. A whole new production facility has been added, and winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt now leads the charge to establish the winery as one of the most exciting in the region. The "Clos du Roi" is primarily one large parcel with just a few tiny satellite parcels. Planted over galets (the classic round white stones of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), the terroir is located in the southern and driest part of the appellation. Composed of primarily Grenache and Syrah, the wine is aged in a mix of stainless steel and older wood. It is a pure and expressive version of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a welcome addition to our Direct Import program.
