All Grenache sourced mostly from the Chapouin lieu-dit with a splash from Janasse, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin shows a medium ruby hue followed by a pretty, perfumed, remarkably elegant profile. It has a core of sweet red and black berry fruits, absolutely heavenly Provençal aromatics of herbes de Provence, black olive, pepper, and flowers, plus ripe, velvety tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Partially destemmed and aged 12 months in 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids, this heavenly 2023 will drink beautifully over the coming two decades. There are roughly 1,500 cases produced.

As always, a pure Grenache Noir sourced from sandy soils, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is a terrific effort. Mingling aromas of wild herbs, dark berries, baked mulberries and garrigue, it avoids the excesses of over-ripeness or overt spice, instead delivering a beautifully controlled expression. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered, it displays impressive concentration and a sense of coiled energy, its muscular core of fruit framed by a fine chassis of ripe tannins. The finish is long, delicately spiced and impressively persistent. This will reward patience, as time in bottle should bring greater harmony and finesse. (YC) 95+

A solid, well-composed and flavorful red with cherries, sweet strawberries, warm herbs and a hint of baked orange. Full-bodied with fine tannins giving a refined texture. Juicy and driven, with a long, flavorful and well-structured finish.

Huge in scale, with a potent, warm, sappy profile. Its opulent rush of ripe cherry and licorice is well-framed by polished, firming tannins. Alder, anise and lavender smoke stream through; the finish is well-supported and reined in. Concentrated and broad-shouldered. This is for fans of the hedonistic style yet still shows drive and complexity. (KB)

Janasse’s flagship cuvée, Vieilles Vignes, remains a benchmark expression of the appellation, drawing on old-vine Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, plus some of the other lesser known grapes, to deliver a classic, layered interpretation of the region. But for me, Chaupin stands apart. Also sourced from old vines, this cuvée is a pure expression of Grenache, drawn from three distinct lieux-dits planted on sandy soils. These soils lend the wine a lifted, cooling freshness, showcasing Grenache in its most pure and transparent form. The aromatics are immediately expressive, with wild strawberry, black cherry, and currant notes unfolding alongside hints of tobacco and spice box that add nuance and complexity. Though still youthful, this Chaupin possesses the structure and pedigree to evolve gracefully over many years. It is a striking example of Grenache at its highest level—and yet another compelling achievement from Isabelle Sabon.

Notes

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over his father’s vineyards in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Today, the estate is led by the sibling team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, with Isabelle serving as the head winemaker and guiding the cellar with a meticulous, terroir-driven approach. The domaine’s holdings span a mosaic of soils - from the sandy, pebble-strewn sites of Chapouin and La Janasse to the red clay and galets roulés of La Crau - giving their wines a distinctive blend of power, depth, and elegance. In the cellar, Isabelle employs a mix of traditional and modern techniques, including hand-harvesting, partial whole-cluster fermentations, long macerations, and aging in both large foudres and barrels. Under her direction, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark estates, celebrated for wines that marry purity and precision with the region’s signature richness. The Chaupin is from a 7 hectare parcel, composed of 100% Grenache from vines first planted in 1912. There is some whole cluster fermentation and the wine is aged in a mix of mostly foudre with about 1/3 in demi-muid. This is one of the icon Grenache wines from the region.
