Power, structure and freshness are united in this stunning, modern Chateauneuf-du-Pape that has stacks of Mediterranean herb and raw meat character. Excellent concentration and energy. The elegantly dry finish is very long and precisely contoured. Sustainable. Drink or hold. (SP)

I love the wines from this estate, which always shine for their incredible perfume and complexity. Exotic red and black fruits, lavender, basil, peppery garrigue, and sandalwood notes define the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape, which is based on 58% Grenache, 24% Syrah, and 18% Mourvèdre that was brought up mostly in larger foudre but with a small part in used barrels. With medium to full-bodied richness, a silky, elegant mouthfeel, present tannins, and outstanding length, this beauty is well worth your time and money. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years.

Wild strawberry, garrigue, cured meat and licorice present the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a full-bodied and spicy rendition of this reliable red Châteauneuf. Balanced by fresh acidity, the savory 2022 is totally inviting and easygoing, yet it also packs sufficient structure for extended bottle-aging. (NG)

Steady red robe; the nose shows clear red fruit, cherry notably, sweetness, is slightly unctuous. The palate is gourmand, floral-toned, works very much on texture, oiliness, plays it safe, is a wine of feel and taste, a bit savoury. The fruit engages easily, and its tannins fit in. The vineyard was hit by hail in the spring and 15 August, meaning the lowest yield since the Cazes family bought the domaine. The harvest started 29 August, ended 16 September.

When the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages took over this historic property in 2006, little changed in terms of winemaking philosophy or vineyard selection. The estate has long been famous for producing just two wines—one white and one red—and that focused tradition continues to this day. Veteran winemaker Bernard Tranchecoste, who was already overseeing the cellar prior to the Cazes family’s arrival, remains at the helm. The resources brought by the Cazes family have been directed primarily toward vineyard improvements, including thoughtful replanting and new parcels that are now coming beautifully into production. Surrounded by the Bois des Sénéchaux (the “Sheriff’s Woods”), the property itself dates back to the 14th century, grounding these refined, modern wines in deep historical roots. Aging is carried out in larger-format wood, not to impart overt oak character, but to add elegance and refinement to the wines. The 2022—an excellent vintage—shows beautiful notes of wild strawberry, redcurrant, Asian spicebox, and pipe tobacco. It is a beautifully structured wine that drinks effortlessly in its youth while possessing the depth and balance to age gracefully for a decade or more.

Notes

Domaine Sénéchaux lies in the heart of what is known as the Sheriff's Wood - Les Bois Sénéchaux. The current landscape of the property was developed primarily in the 1950s and tended by the Raynaud family. In 2006, the estate was purchased by the Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch-Bages fame and its newest iteration began. The wines are made classically but with a modern eye towards deriving the best from each grape. The blend is made up of 47% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, and a mix of 2% Cinsault and Vaccarèse. Syrah and Mourvèdre are aged in one-year-old barrels from Lynch Bages while the Grenache sees a mix of some wood and large vat. The composition is always a seamless blend of the best that this region has to offer.
