The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another winner from this team, and readers can’t go wrong here. Based on 75% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, with the balance Cinsault, it was partially destemmed and brought up all in foudre. This beauty just about jumps out of the glass with its Provençal aromatics of ripe cherries, ground pepper, saddle leather, garrigue, and spice. These carry to a medium to full-bodied wine that has the vintage’s charming, pure character front and center, yet still brings good mid-palate density and ripe tannins. Buy a case, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Excellent depth of black fruits, but the Mediterranean herb aromas dominate the fruit. Then the concentrated and very structured palate sweeps you away in a gentle and sensual way. Wonderful interplay of ripeness and expertly crafted fine tannins through the long, elegant finish. A cuvee 75% grenache, 10% syrah, 10% mourvedre and 5% cinsault that were co-fermented, then matured in foudre. Drink or hold.

Vieux Donjon's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is a balanced, harmonious effort that offers up pretty aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries, accented by hints of crushed stone and dusty earth. It's full-bodied and supple, with a long, silky-textured finish. Richer and riper than the 2021, it shows great harmony and texture. (JC)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of my all-time favorites from this estate. Crushed violets, licorice, red and black cherry, ripe strawberry and leafy elements are all pushed forward. Full-bodied and savory, the 2020 demands at least four more years in bottle to start showing its full potential. (NG)

Vieux Donjon still ranks as one of my favorite QPR Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers. The winery has always focused on doing just two things well: crafting one great red and one great white. Year after year, this bottling lands firmly in my top 10 wines of the category. The 2020 shows a seamless texture and is just beginning to find its classic CDP voice. Wild raspberries, red licorice, and plums are rounded out by notes of garrigue and lead pencil. Excellent terroir expression throughout, and this should continue to gain nuance over the coming decade. An absolute star of the vintage.

Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "dark red; the nose is broad, leads with nicely pure black cherry fruit, mulberry, raspberry, has a soft floral tone. The palate is suave, nicely filled, with fine, ripe tannin on the inside, gathers depth as it goes, extends into a sleek close, well rounded, textured. Has a padded, velvet style, the tannin firm, carries a powder aspect, creeps up rather than asserts, which is good. Classy elegance and classy fruit here, the balance good." (05/2022)
