The 2022 Gigondas Tradition (80% Grenache and 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre) is, perhaps, riper than the Ventabren release and offers a beautiful nose of kirsch and ripe strawberries intermixed with sappy flowers, garrigue, and cedary nuances. It's medium-bodied on the palate as well, with a balanced, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It too plays in that sappy, floral, borderline green end of the spectrum.

A regular cuvée of this estate, the 2022 Gigondas Tradition is showing well today, evoking aromas of licorice, pepper, dark cherries and spices mingled with delicate notes of mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, it's seamless and enveloping, with supple tannins and real mid-palate plenitude, concluding with a long, delicately spicy finish. This blend of 80% Grenache Noir, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, matured for 18 months in used barrels and concrete tanks, is a great success. (YC)

The 2022 Gigondas La Cuvée Tradition blends 80% Grenache with equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre. Ripe red fruits mingle with dried herbs and licorice. The palate adds a juicy blood orange flavor. Smooth and round, this is a promising 2022 red, neatly balanced by sufficient acidity. It should already drink well in its youth. (NG)

Vigneron Jean-Baptiste Meunier has long been one of my favorite producers to visit. His energy is infectious—he’s constantly climbing up and down ladders to draw samples from tanks and barrels, eager to share each stage of his work. During my recent visit, I tasted through the 2022s and 2023s, along with several library vintages, and was once again struck by how precisely these wines capture the essence of Gigondas’ terroir. These are mountain-grown vines, surrounded by forests, thriving within a shared ecosystem that you can taste in the glass. The new Tradition bottling channels that landscape beautifully, with elegant notes of garrigue and wild herbs. On the palate, it shows classic Grenache character—strawberry compote, leafy tobacco, and a touch of spice. The acidity and tannins are perfectly integrated in the 2022 vintage, delivering everything you could want from a soulful, authentic Gigondas.

The "Tradition" truly captures the elegance and forward fruit of the 2022 vintage. It's an immediate and charming blend offering bright aromas of spiced, baked red fruits and a juicy, delicious palate. Nothing not to like about this ready-to-go Gigondas.

The Gardette wines are so freaking delicious and the new 2022s, now in stock, blew my socks off. The Cuvee Tradition is my favorite, but that's not a qualitative statement. The Cuvee Ventabren, a different blend, is also fantastic. It's just a personal preference. I find the Tradition, a classic combination of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, to have deep and alluring aromatics and a burst of fruit on the finish that pleases me greatly. Gigondas is such spectacular terroir, rivaling Chateauneuf-du-Pape, according to my taste buds. Hillside vineyards, old vines, wild yeast, and 1 year in a cask produce floral, jammy, concentrated wine bursting with violets, red licorice, dusted red berries, and herbs that is rich and soft of the palate. I paired this with some yummerz pasta, but the wine was the main event!

Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier represents the fifth generation of winemakers at Moulin de la Gardette in Gigondas. We've worked with this producer since the mid-1990s, and these wines remain among our favorites from the region. Gigondas has emerged from the shadow of neighboring Châteauneuf-du-Pape, creating wines of distinctive intensity and flavor. The appellation's south-facing slopes, higher elevations, and varied soils help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" blends Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah from vines averaging 50-60 years old. Aged approximately 18 months in mostly used foudre and demi-muid before bottling. (Keith Mabry, K&L Rhône Buyer) *Organic*
