Kumusha Wines was founded by Zimbabwean-born sommelier Tinashe Nyamudoka, whose goal is to celebrate African heritage through globally crafted wines. The name “Kumusha” means “your home” in Shona, reflecting the brand’s focus on community, roots, and a sense of belonging. Although inspired by Nyamudoka’s Zimbabwean background, the wines are produced in the renowned vineyards of Western Cape, where diverse terroirs contribute depth and character to each bottle. Kumusha Wines offers varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, each crafted with balance, freshness, and food-friendliness in mind.

Inverroche takes its name from the combination of two words that pay homage to their Scottish ancestry, referencing both Celtic and Gaelic backgrounds. The Scottish word “Inver” means "a confluence of water" and the French word "Roche" means "rock." Inverroche Distillery was founded by Lorna Scott and her family and has bolstered their local community of Still Bay, in the Western Cape of Southern Africa. In just six years, the distillery has grown from a small home industry to a flourishing and pioneering craft distillery. Distiller's notes: "Infused with fynbos from the coastal region and dunes of the Cape Floral Kingdom, Inverroche Gin Amber is a rich and aromatic, amber coloured gin with fresh citrus, slight juniper, sweet toffee apples and delicate floral notes which intertwine to deliver a dry, woody finish."

92 points James Suckling: "Plums, cherries and chocolate orange on the nose of this juicy red. It’s full-bodied with ripe tannins. Nicely balanced. (CN)" (10/2025)

94 points Decanter: "Just starting to drink now. Has good flesh and texture. Plenty of depth here. Crisp acidity, elegant, a fine combination of purity, structure and length. Should develop into an exceptional wine given a bit of time in the cellar. Following one of the wettest winters in 24 years, flowering took place in good conditions. Yields were relatively generous at 23.2hl/ha. Matured for 9 months in 228L barrels (56%), 300L barrels (48%) and 4% foudre. (AH)" (03/2025) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Opening to a nose of bright lemon and peach yogurt with hints of banana, the 2022 Chardonnay is fresh and citrus-laden. Medium-bodied and with 13.2% alcohol, the palate is fresh, balanced and spicy with succulent apple essence before swinging to show an elegant floral notion that finishes fresh and complex. This Chardonnay was barrel fermented and aged in 23% new French oak. Give it a try! (AM)" (12/2023) 93 points Vinous: "The 2022 Chardonnay is matured nine months in 300-liter French oak barrels, 24% new. It has a backward nose demanding just a little coaxing from the glass, revealing tempting lemon thyme, hazelnut and subtly smoky aromas. The palate is taut and fresh with a lovely, slightly waxy texture. The oak is nicely integrated, quite linear and tensile in style, with ample weight toward the poised finish. This is a classy Chardonnay from Hamilton Russell. 13.3% alcohol (NM)" (08/2023) 93 points James Suckling: "This has a lovely nose of cedar, grapefruit, lemon rind, apricot stones and tarragon. Salted butter. It's medium- to full-bodied, deliciously saline and creamy, with a long and elegant finish. Drink or hold." (10/2023) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Cedar aromas are lifted by a fresh note of Key limes on the nose of this well-balanced Chardonnay. A textured palate and vibrant acidity offer a wonderful structure. Delicate flavors of ginger, chamomile and apricot are the stars of the show, while citrus fruit rests in the background. A light flinty note elevates the finish. (JV)" (03/2025) Jancis Robinson: "Fermented 50% in 228-litre, 50% in 300-litre François Frères barrels. Aged nine months in 23% new barrels. Ambient yeast and their own, commercially available, Sauvage strain. More nose than most Hemel Chardonnays. Almost opulent! Rich start and then very fresh with some salinity and lots of impact on the palate. Lemon cream, with light chewiness but not aggressively so. " (05/2023)

This 100% Chenin Blanc is crafted from three sustainably farmed, old-vine parcels in South Africa’s Swartland region — one on the shale and schist soils of Kasteelberg, and two on decomposed granite in the Paardeberg. All vineyards are dry-farmed and bush-trained, with vines over 40 years old. The grapes were hand-harvested, chilled, and whole-bunch pressed before settling overnight. Fermentation occurred naturally over six weeks in a mix of older French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine was blended and bottled, highlighting both site and varietal purity.

94 points Wine Advocate: "The Mullineux 2022 Swartland Syrah comes from a site with quartz formations over schist soils. Quartz tends to erode at a different pace, leaving quartz stones on the surface that reflect light but do not reflect heat. This leads to optimal ripening, with soft cherry and blackberry flavors followed by lightly toasted spice. There is a ferrous note to the wine followed by fine, satiny tannins that have a certain lusciousness about them. The wine sees 80% whole-cluster fruit and is fermented in upright wooden vats. Andrea Mullineux says she is looking for the silky tannins that are specific to the Swartland. "Those tannins are a real fingerprint of the region," she says. (ML)" (06/2025) 94 points Tim Atkin: "If the Mullineux’ terroir-focused Syrahs have maxed out your credit card, why not treat yourself to a bottle of this "regular" release instead. Sourced from the Swartland's three main soil types, this has lovely fynbos and clove aromas, some stemmy notes from 80% whole bunches, blackberry, cooked meat and tapenade flavours and impressive depth and density. A Cape Crozes-Hermitage. " (08/2024) 90 points Vinous: "The 2022 Syrah is a combination of fruit from the three main soil types. It fermented with 80% whole cluster in upright 5,000-liter wooden vats, with the destemmed fruit at the top to get the fermentation going. It has a crisp and precise bouquet with brambly red fruit, a dash of white pepper and Provençal herbs. Quite powerful, the palate is medium-bodied with a slightly viscous texture. That white pepper note thrusts forward through the robust, austere finish. This is a gutsy Syrah that will probably benefit from a year in bottle. (NM)" (08/2024)

99 points Tim Atkin: "Given its consistently outstanding quality, it’s easy to forget that the average age of Porseleinberg's 14 hectares of vineyards is only seven years' old. Showing what Callie Louw calls a "little more crunch" in 2021, this is a Syrah with time on its side. Wild herb aromas of sage, oregano and rosemary introduce you to a palate that's dense yet refined, with lots of whole bunch spice and structure, negligible oak influence, detailed, layered tannins, some underlying grip and layers of dark berry fruit. One of the world's great reds from a very special site." (05/2023) 97 points Vinous: "The 2021 Porseleinberg is whole bunch fermented and aged for 12 months in foudres. I gave my glass plenty of aeration. Chatting with winemaker Callie Louw, this wine can be closed, this being the first time I had tasted it at the remote Swartland estate. It has a compelling bouquet with fabulous delineation, a mélange of, say, one-third red and two-thirds black fruit, hints of iron filings and reflecting its soils, slate-like scents. Obstinately backward, after 10 minutes, it positively blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with filigree tannins framing the mineral-rich black fruit. Plenty of extract is interwoven, but perhaps unlike the vintages of old, Louw's winemaking sense means that it's not immediately tangible. A discrete build in the mouth reveals hidden layers as it sashays towards its crunchy finish and then delivers a dash of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Outstanding…but what else do we expect? (NM) " (08/2023) 97 points James Suckling: "What an intense nose of charcuterie, grilled herbs, iron, black berry fruit and cracked pepper. Flavor explosion on the palate, too, with a full body, yet so much freshness with an underlying iron and peppercorn character. Firm, yet fine tannins. Even better from 2025. " (12/2023) 95 points Wine Advocate: "Ripe yet still firm, the 2021 Syrah is fresh and savory with a delightfully floral element that sways with spicy and dark red-fruited essences. Medium-bodied, the palate is balanced, fresh and firmly structured with gripping tannins and an elegant mineral tension. The wine ends with a ripe and spicy finish. 47,000 bottles were produced after resting 12 months in foudre before bottle aging for 16 months. Between the 2020 and the 2021, the 2021 is the one you want. Just give it another year in bottle, and enjoy through the middle of the next decade. (AM) " (12/2023)

MAN Vintners, located in Stellenbosch, was established in 2001 by José Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh, who named the winery after the first initials of their wives: Marie, Anette, and Nicky. The winery’s philosophy centers on producing high-quality, sustainably grown, and varietally true wines that offer exceptional value. Their grapes are largely sourced from dry-farmed vineyards in the Agter-Paarl and Coastal Region, promoting intense flavor concentration in the fruit. The “Padstal” Chardonnay is named after the traditional roadside farm stalls of South Africa, symbolizing the country's local produce and community spirit. The wine is crafted to be a refreshing, lively expression of Chardonnay – a balancing act between crisp fruit and very subtle oak creaminess. The palate is typically zesty and fresh, showcasing lime and lemon, complemented by white nectarine and greengage plum.

Located in the Paarl/Simonsberg region of the Western Cape, Vilafonté was established in yjr late 1990s as a collaboration between South African and American wine experts — Michael Ratcliffe, Dr. Zelma Long and Dr. Phil Freese —with the ambition to craft wines that could “stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest wines in the world”. The estate spans about 42 hectares planted exclusively to the four classic Bordeaux red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec) on the ancient “vilafontes” soils — soils estimated to be between 750,000 and 1.5 million years old, which have remained undisturbed by glaciation or volcanic activity. The vines are planted at high density, and yields are kept deliberately low to produce highly concentrated fruit. Their wines have earned international acclaim, becoming among the highest-scoring Bordeaux-style reds from South Africa. The “Seriously Old Dirt” is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, matured for 18 months in 48% new French oak barrels.

95 points Tim Atkin: "Back where it belongs among the elite wine brands of South Africa, the 2018 Rubicon is a worthy successor to the stellar 2017 release. Featuring Cabernet Sauvignon with 33% Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is an elegant, polished, refined wine from a hot, dry vintage that illustrates the benefit of a cooler site. Floral, balanced and poised. " (12/2022) 92 points Wine Advocate: "Composed of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 19% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Rubicon offers a broad-shouldered expression with an Old World essence. The nose explodes with a wide variety of aromas, expressing a subtle Old World funk with an equally pleasing amount of New World vibrancy and freshness. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers dark fruit flavors with a fine beam of acidity while expressing a firm tannic edge that will loosen in time. The wine glides to a refined and complex finish that will continue to evolve gracefully for a decade. Unfortunately, there will not be a 2019 Rubicon." (07/2023) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Broad and open-knit, this harmonious red integrates fine tannins with a fragrant overtone of cured tobacco, featuring baked currant and fig, fresh and loamy earth, black licorice twist and milled pepper. Fresh and focused on the finish, where the tobacco note lingers on. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. (AN)" (08/2022)

From a vineyard planted in the 1950s on granite soils. The fruit was fermented in whole clusters and then aged in foudre for 14 months before bottling.

Reyneke is celebrated as a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture in South Africa, having been the first farm in the country to achieve Demeter certification for biodynamics. Led by founder Johan Reyneke, the estate embraces a holistic, non-interventionist approach, avoiding all synthetic chemicals, using natural predators like ducks for pest control, and making their own compost. This old vine Chenin Blanc is a blend of the oldest vineyards on the Reyneke estate. The vineyards were planted in 1974 and 1979 respectively.

Momento was founded in 2013 while Marelise Niemann was the winemaker at Beaumont Family Wines in Bot River. Since then, she has earned a reputation for producing wines of purity, elegance, and honesty. She works with old vines in both Bot River and the Swartland, following a minimal intervention philosophy that highlights terroir. Marelise is deeply committed to using grape varieties that thrive in South Africa’s climate—those that can withstand low rainfall and high temperatures, naturally integrate with their environment, and require minimal inputs. Varieties like Chenin, Verdelho, and Grenache flourish in these dry, warm conditions. For Marelise, the future lies in working with well-adapted grapes, minimizing energy and water use, and allowing vineyards to thrive with minimal interference.

91 points James Suckling: "Dark plums, coffee, black olives and braised mushrooms on the nose of this mellow red. It’s medium- to full-bodied with nicely softened tannins and a silky finish. Cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. (CN)" (09/2025) 91 points Tim Atkin: "The Meerlust Red has hit volumes of 140,000 bottles and been a noticeable success. Led by Cabernet Franc, with a supporting chorus of 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and 14% Petit Verdot, this uses grapes from young vine parcels. Mint, graphite and red berries combine to get effect here, embellished by a lick of oak. " (06/2025)

94 points Decanter: "A super elegant iteration of Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir. Soft, fleshy, there is an abundance of fine ripeness here. Complex flavours, plenty of depth, intriguing spice notes and finishing with a fine line of acidity. The wettest winter for 24 years was followed by higher than usual rain during flowering. Dry and fine weather followed with late ripening and low yields (16.2hl/ha). 100% aged in François Frères barrels. pH of 3.61 and acidity of 5.41g/l. (AH)" (03/2025) 94 points Tim Atkin: "Rarely a Pinot Noir that one should be in a hurry to drink, the 2022 Hamilton Russell bottling needs time to develop and work its magic. This 2022 is comparatively serious and shuttered at the moment, with dark-fruited complexity, some clove spice from 10% whole clusters, grippy, sinewy tannins and stylish 36% new wood. " (06/2023) 93 points Wine Advocate: "93+ points. Popping out of the glass with succulent dark red cherries and fresh potpourri essence, the 2022 Pinot Noir bursts with notes of wild herbs and turned earth. Medium-bodied, the palate offers flavors of black raspberry with a firm-gripping tannic edge. It shows seductive florals with spicy flavors and ends with a food-friendly finish." (12/2023) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The Hamilton Russell winery is a pioneer in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and offers an elegant and spicy Pinot Noir. The nose opens with white pepper and nutmeg. An energized palate and tight tannins provide a good frame for strawberries, cherries and subtle dried herbs. Hints of cardamom appear in the aftertaste." (04/2024) 92 points James Suckling: "This is a sleek pinot with notes of cloves, cranberries, thyme and raw mushrooms. Hints of iron. Medium-bodied, savory and nicely balanced, with fine-grained tannins. Drink now or hold." (10/2023)

A cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, Pinotage was first planted at Kanonkop in 1941 and thrives in the estate’s decomposed granite soils, producing wines with deep color, rich dark fruit flavors of plum, cherry and blackberry, as well as complex spice, earthy and smoky nuances. The estate’s flagship Pinotage is known for both accessibility in its youth and the ability to age gracefully, often gaining additional depth and earthy complexity over time. Kanonkop’s Pinotage has helped define and elevate the reputation of this uniquely South African varietal on the global stage.

93 points Decanter: "Intense tangerine and almond bouquet weave through biscuity apricot, fig and lime, before zippy acidity and flinty, wet-wool finish. *2025 Decanter World Wine Awards*" (06/2025) 93 points James Suckling: "An invitingly toasty chardonnay that has aromas of roasted hazelnuts, peaches, pie crust and lemon butter. It’s full-bodied, lightly buttery and full of flavor, with a long, bright finish. (CN)" (08/2024) 90 points Wine Advocate: "Under screw cap, the Tokara 2023 Stellenbosch Reserve Collection Chardonnay reveals a pretty succession of honey, orchard fruit and citrus that eventually incorporate creamier elements of pastry and lemon preserve. This is a medium-rich interpretation that ages for nine months in French oak, with 28% new oak, and 80% malolactic fermentation is allowed. (ML)" (06/2025)

93 points Tim Atkin: "A wine that is all about texture and tension rather than oak, this blend of Sauvignon Blanc, 18% Chardonnay and 16% Semillon was fermented and aged in amphoras, ceramic and concrete eggs and older barrels. Herbal, structured and pithy, it has appealing aromas of petrichor and fennel, flavours of citrus, tarragon and elderflower and an enticing bitter twist. " (06/2025) 91 points Vinous: "The 2024 Sandstone is a blend of 66% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Chardonnay and 18% Sémillon, fermented mostly in amphora. It has quite a pungent bouquet that I really like, with touches of white asparagus and nettle and fine delineation. The palate is well balanced, with a touch of lemon and orange rind and just a hint of that asparagus again, with a lovely texture on the finish. It's not a crowd pleaser, but I like its uncompromising nature. (NM) " (08/2025)

96 points Tim Atkin: "One of the best Ashbourne releases yet, this fully justifies Anthony Hamilton Russell's claim that this often under-valued grape can produce world-class wines. Sourced from a six--year old 2.2-hectare vineyard on heavy clays, it's alluringly perfumed and intense, with potpourri and rose petal aromas, caressing tannins, pomegranate and wild strawberry flavours and a racy, balanced finish." (09/2024) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Ashbourne 2022 Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Pinotage offers raspberry, red cherry and a hint of that black olive or scorched earth that you often get with this grape. Pinotage has thick skins, and you also get bitter rose petal. Some liken it to a cross between Nebbiolo (thanks to the tannins) and a Beaujolais. "Anyone who says Pinot Noir is hard to make obviously hasn't made Pinotage," says winemaker Emul Ross. Farming is easy but the grape is difficult to vinify, with risks of volatile acidity and Brettanomyces (high sugar can contribute to bacterial growth). Made close to the ocean, this Pinotage shows a pretty mineral theme. Emul Ross suggests serving it at a barracuda barbecue, and I can't resist but submit that suggestion to your attention. (ML)" (06/2025) 92 points Vinous: "The 2022 Pinotage, grown on the estate's clayey soils, matured for 14 months in 400-liter barrels and 2,000-liter foudres. It has clean black plum and briar scents on the nose, with just a touch of melted tar coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit and fine-boned tannins, very well balanced with a touch of black olive on the finish. This is excellent—one of the best I've tasted. (NM)" (08/2024)

Founded in 2010 by husband-and-wife team Chris and Suzaan Alheit, Alheit Vineyards is a boutique South African winery perched on the Hemel-and-Aarde Ridge in Walker Bay. Their mission is to create wines with a strong “cape identity”, primarily sourcing grapes from old, dry-farmed bush vines. What sets Alheit apart is their deeply terroir-driven ethos. With vineyards across diverse sites such as the Paardeberg, Skurfberg, False Bay and Franschhoek, many of their vines are decades old and farmed without irrigation. In the cellar, they practice a “less is more” approach: whole-cluster pressing, native-yeast fermentations, no acidification, and maturation in neutral vessels rather than new oak—to preserve the character of the vineyard rather than impose a style. Their wines have become benchmarks for the new wave of South African white wine, offering precision, freshness and an expressiveness of place. The Hemelrand Vineyard is situated on the cold and windy Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level, on gravelly clay, and Sandstone. The vineyard was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin Blanc, and Muscat Blanc a petit grain, all of which are included in the Vine Garden wine in proportions that vary each vintage.

Fynbos is an abundant floral system unique to the South African landscape that includes over 9,000 species of plant within its natural habitat. It is from this singular botanical phenomenon that Inverroche gently and sustainably procures the botanical foundation for their gins. Not only is this a well-crafted classic gin with vibrant juniper notes, citrus edges, and aromatic complexity—it is all that and a singular distilled expression of the complex and vibrant ecosystem of Fynbos! There's just nothing else like it. Inverroche Distillery was founded by Lorna Scott and her family and has grown from strength to strength in the local community of Still Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa.

Rustenberg is one of South Africa’s most historic and respected wine estates, with a winemaking tradition stretching back to the 18th century, with continuous bottled wine production since 1892. Among its flagship wines is the John X Merriman, a Bordeaux-style red blend named in honor of John X. Merriman, who bought the farm in 1892 during the devastating phylloxera crisis and helped revitalize the vineyards near Stellenbosch. This wine showcases fruit exclusively from the Rustenberg estate and typically blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller portions of varieties like Petit Verdot and Malbec, reflecting the character of each vintage. Aged for around 20 months in French oak, it combines structure and finesse, making it both approachable young and capable of aging.

Klein Constantia is one of South Africa’s oldest and most historically significant wine estates, founded in 1685 in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Its fame is closely tied to Vin de Constance, a naturally sweet dessert wine that became world-renowned in the 18th and 19th centuries, enjoyed by European royalty and figures like Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile. The estate declined in the late 1800s due to phylloxera and changing economic conditions, but it was revitalized in the late 20th century with a renewed focus on quality and historical authenticity. Vin de Constance is made primarily from Muscat de Frontignan grapes (also known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). To produce it, grapes are harvested at varying ripeness levels, with some left to partially raisin on the vine, concentrating their sugars and flavors. After careful hand-sorting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented slowly, stopping naturally due to the high sugar content. The wine is then aged for several years in a combination of French oak barrels, large foudres, and stainless steel to develop complexity. The result is a rich, golden wine with notes of apricot, honey, citrus peel, and spice, balanced by bright acidity. Today, Vin de Constance remains a flagship wine of Klein Constantia and a symbol of South Africa’s winemaking heritage.

Duncan Savage developed a reputation for making profound, mineral-driven white wines with aging potential from interesting, exposed terroirs, and in 2011 he began his own project, Savage Wines, in tandem with his then-day job. The Savage Wines were met with great critical acclaim and in 2016 he made them his full-time endeavor. He buys grapes and leases vineyards with old varietals in interesting sites all over the Western Cape. Stylistically he focuses on freshness and elegance, crafting wines that are restrained, with lower alcohols.

91 points Wine Spectator: "A vibrant red, with a core of ripe mulberry, raspberry and boysenberry fruit flavors. Light, supple tannins and lively acidity provide fine definition for the medium-bodied frame, and notes of violet, thyme, anise and iron linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030. (AN)" (03/2025) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose of this wine is subtle, but the palate is generous. It has aromas of peppercorn and berries and flavors of blackcurrant and other dark fruit. Excellent acidity and fine tannins provide energy and structure to this lively red. (JV) " (09/2024)

Inverroche takes its name from the combination of two words that pay homage to their Scottish ancestry, referencing both their Celtic and Gaelic backgrounds. The Scottish word “Inver” meaning ‘a confluence of water’ and the French word “Roche” meaning ‘rock or stone’. Inverroche Distillery was founded by Lorna Scott and her family and has grown from strength to strength in the local community of Still Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa. In just 6 years, the distillery has grown from a small home industry to a flourishing and pioneering craft distillery. Distiller's notes: "Infused with fynbos from the mountainous terrain of the Cape Floral Kingdom, Inverroche Gin Verdant is floral and soft with a translucent golden-green hue. Delicate aromas reminiscent of elderflower and chamomile, lead to summer blooms, a touch of spice, subtle juniper, waxy lemon rind and alluring liquorice on the palate."

Made by famed winemaker Duncan Savage of Savage Wines, the Salt River Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of five different vineyard sites located around Stellenbosch. The anchor of the wine is the now a 35-year-old bush vine vineyard grown on the slopes of Bottelary. The other components are trellised and bush vine vineyards, with various different aspects, planted in granitic soil. These vineyards have combined exceptionally well in creating the saline mineral style of Sauvignon.

92 points James Suckling: "Attractive nose of baked apples, cinnamon, brioche and loads of baking spices as well. Medium-bodied, precise and refreshing with bright acidity and fine bubbles. Suave with volume on the mid-palate and focus on the finish" (10/2023)

95 points James Suckling: "The meatiest and most concentrated of the three single-vineyard syrahs, this has notes of bacon fat, peppercorns, black olives and brambleberries. It’s medium- to full-bodied, broad and firm, with fine and chewy tannins. Still tightly wound. From a vineyard planted in 1988. 100% crushed whole-cluster fermentation. " (10/2024) 95 points Wine Advocate: "95+ points. Farmed with regenerative organic methods, this is the vineyard closest to the Mullineux winery. The 2022 Swartland Schist Syrah has a pinch of tannins followed by herbal notes of grilled rosemary and oregano. At its core, the wine shows damson plum, blackberry and red peppercorns. Fruit is physically smaller in the Schist vineyard, resulting in extra concentration and richness. Despite that richer fruit profile, this Syrah reveals impressive balance and staying power. It is the most powerful of the three Syrahs presented in this series, and it could be the wine with the most interesting aging trajectory. (ML" (06/2025) 95 points Vinous: "The 2022 Syrah Schist comes from shallower soils than the Iron with smaller canopies and clusters. It was crushed whole-cluster like the other single vineyards but yielded a higher skin-to-juice ratio as the berries are smaller and the skins thicker. This has a lifted, more fruit-driven bouquet with raspberry, briar, white pepper and a touch of gravel. Smooth and poised, the palate is very harmonious on the entry and perhaps more nuanced and complex than the Iron and Granite cuvées toward the finish. It leaves a dusting of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Very persistent in the mouth, this is outstanding. (NM)" (08/2024)

A blend of 80% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chardonnay and 10% Viognier sourced from Swartland—South Africa’s oldest and largest wine region—the wine showcases fruit from dry-farmed bush vines, many over 100 years old. These ancient, low-yielding vineyards produce intensely concentrated grapes that would otherwise be blended into commercial wines. Grapes are picked by hand, chilled overnight, and then pressed into settling tanks. The next day, the juice gets moved into fermentation tanks. The wine is matured on fine lees for six months before bottling.

96 points Tim Atkin: ""I want to take the varieties off the label," says Wim Truter, who'd rather people focus on the terroir and the quality of the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with a supporting cast of 41% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this is the latest in a run of impressive Rubicon releases, showing classic poise, elegance and refinement. Detailed, pure and well balanced, it has cassis, bramble and tobacco leaf flavours, scented oak and refreshing acidity. " (06/2023) 92 points Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Rubicon is composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in lesser proportions. The wine marks a triumphant return, after no Rubicon was released in 2019. The wine is densely fruit-forward, tightly wound and dusty, with clean aromatics that round out its robust character. It features a balanced, elegantly powerful palate with refreshing tannins and consistent acidity that keeps everything in check. The finish is notably food friendly, echoing with nuances of lead pencil. After eight months in the barrel, the components were blended and aged for an additional 10 months in barrels. New Dawn Wines is the personal project of South African winemaker Rüdger van Wyk, whose journey into wine is closely tied to both his upbringing and the broader history of South Africa. He grew up in George, far from the traditional wine regions, in a family that emphasized education to overcome the limitations imposed by apartheid-era inequality. Rüdger van Wyk was first introduced to winemaking as a teenager through his brother, sparking an interest that led him to study at Stellenbosch University and later refine his craft internationally, including time in Burgundy. After nearly a decade producing acclaimed wines at Stark-Condé, he left in 2023 to launch New Dawn Wines as an independent label that reflects creative freedom and a more inclusive vision of South African wine. The winery itself represents a “new dawn” not just personally, but symbolically—aimed at breaking from rigid traditions and making wine more culturally relevant and accessible. This philosophy is especially clear in the Lifestyle Red, which was created in response to the founder’s belief that fine wine had become too expensive and overly formal for everyday enjoyment. This wine blends 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Grenache Noir, 27% Syrah, 11% Cinsaut, and 5% Carignan from certified sustainable Western Cape vineyards to create an expressive but approachable wine.
