Drawing on the fynbos that are endemic to the coastal limestone rich hills and cliffs on the Cape, Inverroche's classic gin sets an extremely high bar for the lineup. It drinks like a more exotic London Dry. It's decidedly junipery with a fresh grassy cut when tasted neat. This blends perfectly with any quinine heavy tonic. The fynbos provide a unique floral component that is painted with a set of colors no other artist or landscape can copy. Citrus and rose petal begin to describe the combination - but by no means capture it. There is too much spice and verve to leave it at that. While I've been to Cape many years ago, I must admit my experience with fynbos remains nil. They are so unique it's impossible to capture their essence in words. It is captured in this gin.

This dead ringer for a dry London gin is actually from South Africa. The particular blend of local botanicals creates a near-perfect gin that leaves the drinker with the envious challenge of deciding whether to make a refreshing G&T or a classic martini. While the olive will work fine, I would recommend you go with the cocktail onion. Ultimately, either choice will serve you well. This bottle will be featured in my liquor cabinet for the summer. Gin & Tonics or martinis anyone?

A fantastic bottle of gin, the "Classic" offering from Inverroche doesn't lean to heavily into its designation, with spectacular results. Bright, floral notes bracing in a clean citrus beam that goes in and around the background juniper makes this a super cool G&T candidate, but also something that a cocktail aficionado could really sink their teeth into. The limestone region the botanicals are sourced from isn't super prevalent, but does lend a curious finish that is one of my favorite components of this bottling.

Classic and delicious with just the right balance between juniper and citrus notes. In the nose there are juniper, citrus and a subtle floral hints. In the mouth it is soft and clean with dry botanical notes support by citrus flavors. Use it in any cocktail that calls for a classic dry gin.

Notes

Fynbos is an abundant floral system unique to the South African landscape that includes over 9,000 species of plant within its natural habitat. It is from this singular botanical phenomenon that Inverroche gently and sustainably procures the botanical foundation for their gins. Not only is this a well-crafted classic gin with vibrant juniper notes, citrus edges, and aromatic complexity—it is all that and a singular distilled expression of the complex and vibrant ecosystem of Fynbos! There's just nothing else like it. Inverroche Distillery was founded by Lorna Scott and her family and has grown from strength to strength in the local community of Still Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa.
