This has a perfumed nose of violets, mint chocolate, blackcurrants, paprika, cassis and ground coriander. Some salty black olives on the palate. Full-bodied, with polished, creamy and broad tannins. Lovely weight in the mid palate. 88% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot and 2% cabernet franc and 2% malbec. Drink or hold.

The Vilafonté team seeks out vineyards planted in ancient soils for this wine. Their 2021 has an open structure that allows the velvet tannins and dried-herbal aspect to shine in front of the blackberry fruit. The finish ties these two aspects more closely together, creating a gentle complexity. A delicious, old-fashioned cabernet.

Made from mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 8% Merlot and 2% each of Malbec and Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Seriously Old Dirt is ripe, herbal and spicy with notions of turned earth, dark cherry and spiced plum. Medium-bodied, the red blend has a savory and fresh palate, overdelivering at its price point and punching above its weight class. A little over 300,000 bottles were filled after resting for 12-18 months. (AM)

Vinous

Review Date: 08/2023
The 2021 Seriously Old Dirt is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, matured for 12-18 Months in a combination of older French oak barrique (48%) and the remaining balance in tanks with new French oak. It has a clean and fresh bouquet with blackberry, cedar and light pencil shaving aromas, just a subtle scent of wild mint in the background. Nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy-textured opening, veering more to red fruit (raspberry and wild strawberry) with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper. Fruit-forward towards the finish, this has more opulence compared to other Bordeaux blends this vintage. Still, everything is finely proportioned, with a very slight leafiness emanating from the cooler vintage on the finish. Seriously good. (NM)

Notes

Located in the Paarl/Simonsberg region of the Western Cape, Vilafonté was established in yjr late 1990s as a collaboration between South African and American wine experts — Michael Ratcliffe, Dr. Zelma Long and Dr. Phil Freese —with the ambition to craft wines that could “stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest wines in the world”. The estate spans about 42 hectares planted exclusively to the four classic Bordeaux red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec) on the ancient “vilafontes” soils — soils estimated to be between 750,000 and 1.5 million years old, which have remained undisturbed by glaciation or volcanic activity. The vines are planted at high density, and yields are kept deliberately low to produce highly concentrated fruit. Their wines have earned international acclaim, becoming among the highest-scoring Bordeaux-style reds from South Africa. The “Seriously Old Dirt” is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, matured for 18 months in 48% new French oak barrels.
