2022 Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Decanter
Review Date: 03/2025A super elegant iteration of Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir. Soft, fleshy, there is an abundance of fine ripeness here. Complex flavours, plenty of depth, intriguing spice notes and finishing with a fine line of acidity. The wettest winter for 24 years was followed by higher than usual rain during flowering. Dry and fine weather followed with late ripening and low yields (16.2hl/ha). 100% aged in François Frères barrels. pH of 3.61 and acidity of 5.41g/l. (AH)

Rarely a Pinot Noir that one should be in a hurry to drink, the 2022 Hamilton Russell bottling needs time to develop and work its magic. This 2022 is comparatively serious and shuttered at the moment, with dark-fruited complexity, some clove spice from 10% whole clusters, grippy, sinewy tannins and stylish 36% new wood.

93+ points. Popping out of the glass with succulent dark red cherries and fresh potpourri essence, the 2022 Pinot Noir bursts with notes of wild herbs and turned earth. Medium-bodied, the palate offers flavors of black raspberry with a firm-gripping tannic edge. It shows seductive florals with spicy flavors and ends with a food-friendly finish.

This is a sleek pinot with notes of cloves, cranberries, thyme and raw mushrooms. Hints of iron. Medium-bodied, savory and nicely balanced, with fine-grained tannins. Drink now or hold.

Email ThomasFor decades now, Hamilton Russell has been producing the best expressions of Burgundy Varieties from the ultra-cool climate region of Hemel-en-Aarde in South Africa. They were alone in this region when they first began putting in vineyards, but as they have grown in acclaim over the decades, others took note and now there are nearly 16 winemakers in this tiny, cool region of South Africa. The 2022 Pinot Noir hits Hamilton-Russell’s French-driven style right off the bat. With aromas of tobacco, cigar box, floral notes and red cherry on the nose, the palate leads to a more muscular expression than the 21. Brambly fruit with pomegranate and strawberry on the plate offset with a kick of spice. This is sleek and streamlined with plenty of texture and tannin but without a touch of bitterness. A global-benchmark Pinot Noir that is incredibly competitive to French alternatives at its price.
