Power and precision in the flavours, a touch of tar, rosebuds, pink grapefruit, preserved citrus, star anise, just a ton of flavour and character and grip, it stretches out through the palate, peach pit, with energy and power. Just such a consistently great wine. Matthew Day winemaker, 90ha estate, 18 months in 50% new 500L Hungarian and French oak barrels, followed by 16 months in large oak casks, 168g/h residual sugar. Alcohol 14%.

Fragrant, enticing aromas of apricot jam, jasmine, orange rind, mangoes, cloves and creme caramel waft from the glass, combining with candied ginger and cinnamon rolls. It’s luscious and concentrated. The sweet fruit is balanced by bright acidity with spicy, savory and zesty components. Very long and beautiful. (CN)

The Klein Constantia 2022 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine is primary and exuberant, reflecting a warmer, compressed growing season. Harvest was condensed by roughly four weeks in this hot vintage, remaining largely textbook until late-season conditions accelerated picking, which finished in the first week of April. The grapes underwent cold settling before pressing, with ongoing blending at various points and after extended élevage. This vintage allowed for particularly strict fruit selection, with some components excluded entirely. The wine shows explosive orange fruit aromatics with saffron and honeycomb. Cooling Atlantic breezes remain critical in preserving balance in warmer vintages like 2022. (ML)

Picked in 18 tranches to build complexity in the wine, this is the latest in a run of excellent Vin de Constance releases from the ever-youthful Matt Day. Broader and more exotic than the 2021, with a pH of 3.8, it has notes of honey, crème brûlée and orange marmalade, vanilla-scented 50% new oak, refreshing acidity and a textbook 168 grams of residual sugar.

Notes

Klein Constantia is one of South Africa’s oldest and most historically significant wine estates, founded in 1685 in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Its fame is closely tied to Vin de Constance, a naturally sweet dessert wine that became world-renowned in the 18th and 19th centuries, enjoyed by European royalty and figures like Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile. The estate declined in the late 1800s due to phylloxera and changing economic conditions, but it was revitalized in the late 20th century with a renewed focus on quality and historical authenticity. Vin de Constance is made primarily from Muscat de Frontignan grapes (also known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). To produce it, grapes are harvested at varying ripeness levels, with some left to partially raisin on the vine, concentrating their sugars and flavors. After careful hand-sorting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented slowly, stopping naturally due to the high sugar content. The wine is then aged for several years in a combination of French oak barrels, large foudres, and stainless steel to develop complexity. The result is a rich, golden wine with notes of apricot, honey, citrus peel, and spice, balanced by bright acidity. Today, Vin de Constance remains a flagship wine of Klein Constantia and a symbol of South Africa’s winemaking heritage.
