Founded in Mexico City by Hillhamn Salome, Flor De Luna Distillery is one of Mexico's only female owned and operated distilleries. This complex liquor with a base of high-quality mezcal is named for the Zapotec word for women, "XILA" and contains seven distinct flavor ingredients that work to create the uniquely delicious profile: caramelized pineapple, lavender, ancho chile, hibiscus flower, clove, cinnamon, and black pepper. The house of Emilio Miró is one of the few survivors of the golden age of Vermouth before the Spanish Civil war. Today they're the most prominent remaining producer of Vermut de Reus. The roots of Vermut de Reus extend to 1858, when Reus was the center of the Catalan wine trade. The tradition of La Hora del Vermut (Vermouth Hour) is once again a late afternoon fixture throughout Spain, especially in Catalunya, and the sweet red (rojo) variety is found in nearly every café and bar on ice, with olives and an orange slice or spritz'ed. Meanwhile, bartenders are discovering that the subdued sweetness of Timbal Vermouth shines in classic cocktail proportions as tastes run toward drier yet no less flavorful formulations.

This wonderfully delicious Apertif has big and rich orange flavors and a "just right" amount of bitterness, sweetness and tart blood orange. It is also all natural and has about 1/3 (or less!) the calories of the competition. The entire line of these Apertif's also do not have any artificial coloring. I tried it both "straight" and with its perfect mate, Prosecco. It makes a superb spritz that is not overly sweet and is much more subtle and just plain delicious. I can also see it being mixed with soda water or vodka, or both!

Everything this place makes is fantastic. It's just super amazing really high end versions of your favorite amari. This is the Campari analogue, inspired by vintage Campari, and it's just pretty perfect. It has this depth and roundness that's just whacky in how finely tuned it is. There's cola, grapefruit zest, citron, Satsuma, and maybe Gentian all on the nose, it's so vivid and complex and just downright interesting. Fantastic mouthfeel and texture on the palate, really great depth with a lot of the same notes showing, there's more kind of a spiciness on the palate with clove, cinnamon, lots of citrus, vanilla, and then then a lingering finish with bitterness vying with sweetness and acidity and finding nothing but balance in the end. This makes me happy on a profound and deep level.

At the very least you'll know that the ingredients are of the very highest quality, plus it's not even that expensive considering the work that it takes to make a product like this good on this scale. Must-buy for Campari lovers, must-try for those yet to get on the aperitivo train.
