Sourced from vines planted in the sectors of Beaumes and Péléat, and matured entirely in new large barrels, the 2023 Hermitage unfurls from the glass with aromas of pepper, spices, fresh licorice, dark berries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep, it’s layered and sappy, built around a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, mineral finish. Dense and enveloping, it will benefit, as usual, from time in the cellar to fully integrate. (YC)

Chave’s 2023 Hermitage is elegant and expressive, well suited to the character of the vintage, revealing aromas of sweet dark berries, incense, violet, dark cherries and tapenade. Full-bodied, satiny and suave, deep and concentrated, it’s pure and seamless, built around ultra-refined tannins for such a young Hermitage, with lively acidity lending tension and freshness, concluding with a long, perfumed and persistent finish. Remarkably accessible in its youth, it nonetheless warrants extended cellaring; the particular profile of the vintage appears especially well adapted to this cuvée and should permit long aging while preserving its aromatic expansiveness. Just bottled but certainly not showing any worse for it, the 2023 Hermitage Blanc offers up gorgeous aromatics of quince, honeyed white flowers, and blanched almond on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, round, incredibly pure, and seamless on the palate, with a supple, vibrant texture and a gorgeous finish. This is an absolute lights-out Hermitage Blanc that I wish every reader could taste. I love it even today, yet it's going to cruise in cold cellars for at least two decades.

The 2024 Crozes-Hermitage first wafts notes of white pepper, blackberry, red plum and a touch of graphite. Medium-bodied and concentrated, the 2024 is a delicious follow-up to the equally enticing 2023 I tasted last year. Clocks out with gentle persistence on the spice-tinged finish. (NG)

Josh Raynolds reports: "By now it’s no secret that Erin Cannon-Chave and Jean-Louis Chave’s semi-négociant operation is producing a range of consistently excellent wines that clearly show the Chave magic at user-friendly prices." From the importer: "The Chave family is based in a small village on the northern right bank of the Rhone. There have been Chaves growing vines on the famous Hermitage hill since 1481. Gerard Chave took over from his father in 1970 and rapidly achieved megastar status due to the extraordinary quality of his wines and has since passed on the winemaking responsibilities to his son Jean-Louis. The Chave’s methods for all their winemaking are traditional farming, super low yields, full ripeness, and minimal manipulation. Their unmatched meticulousness continues through five centuries to render venerable expressions of the purest of Rhône terroir."
Harmonious and lively, the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre wafts from the glass with aromas of dark cherries, spices, mulberries, blueberries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it’s well balanced, built around a deep core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. It's a Crozes-Hermitage that transcends its appellation. (YC)
From a 2 hectare lieu dit called Les Pierres in Tournon. Echalas training, 30 year old vines. Destemmed. 18 months ageing in 600 litre barrels and wine globes. Spicy, meaty, peppery nose with some grip. Very stylish and expressive with a bit of grip here.
