Harmonious and lively, the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre wafts from the glass with aromas of dark cherries, spices, mulberries, blueberries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it’s well balanced, built around a deep core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. It's a Crozes-Hermitage that transcends its appellation. (YC)

A precise, flavorful, refined and lively Crozes-Hermitage with dark cherries, forest floor, stones, roasted meat and smoke on the nose, following through to a medium body with fine tannins and bright acidity. So agile and driven, with a velvety texture. It’s attractive, with a savory, crunchy and transparent character. Plenty of verve and a long finish.

The 2023 Saint-Joseph needs time to open up, gradually revealing ripe blackberry, dark plum and spicy traits. Subnotes of pencil shavings add mineral depth. Medium-bodied and smooth, the 2023 is a neatly-sculpted red Saint-Joseph that won't need much time to come around. Concludes with heightened precision and savoriness on the attractive finish. (NG)

I adore this wine. This is a much deeper and more profound expression of Crozes-Hermitage, with floral and herbal notes layered over deep, savory fruit. There is so much terroir on display here. It is never heavy or hedonistic, but it has tremendous presence and depth. I first tasted this from barrel in 2025 and again from bottle in 2026, and it has continued to impress me at every stage. This is a magnificent expression of Syrah that encapsulates just how good a great Crozes-Hermitage can be.

Notes

Domaine Yann Chave is a family-run estate located in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, with holdings also on the esteemed Hermitage hillside. Founded in the early 1970s by Nicole and Bernard Chave, the domaine began with a mix of vineyards and fruit orchards. After taking over in 1996, Yann Chave shifted focus exclusively to viticulture, restructuring the vineyards and eventually transitioning the estate to organic farming—an effort sparked by a personal experience with chemical poisoning. Certified organic since 2007, the estate now spans 20 hectares, and Yann’s thoughtful, detail-driven approach balances technical precision with deep respect for the land and future generations. Le Rouvre is sourced from the “Les Pautus” terraces, where the former Rhône riverbed left behind a thick layer of rolled river pebbles - an iconic feature of the Crozes-Hermitage terroir. The site is home to massal-selection Syrah vines over 60 years old, yielding naturally low quantities of concentrated fruit. Vinification is low-intervention: grapes are destemmed, gently pumped over during a four-week maceration, and fermented at moderate temperatures. Aging takes place in 600L demi-muids for one year, followed by six months in tank before bottling. The resulting wine is structured yet supple, with notes of black fruit, olive, and smoky minerality, finishing fresh and persistent.
