Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. One of my favourite ‘99s, this has a very lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet that Didier sometimes conjures. Blackberry, cedar, raspberry leaf, pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, not quite as ebullient as the bottle in Bordeaux last year, but it has great vivacity and purity towards the finish. Sappy blackberry, boysenberry and strawberry with a touch of Asian spice. Excellent. (NM)

The 1999 Léoville Poyferré is a wine that I always enjoyed, though I have not tasted it for the last 10 years. The bouquet has mellowed in the interim, though it retains seductive, almost effervescent red fruit mixed with undergrowth, hung game, fresh mint and pine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a menthol-tinged opening. This feels smooth but quite high-toned, that mintiness continuing right to the finish. (NM)

Notes

Léoville-Poyferré made a delicious wine in 1999. The nose has a tiny whiff of sweet cola. It has juicy up-front flavors of dark chocolate and raspberry cassis that carry through. This estate continues to crank out top-notch, user-friendly wines. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot.
