Medium-deep ruby. Smoky aromas of blackberry, black pepper, black olive, bacon fat, eucalyptus and meat. Firm acidity gives the blackberry and pepper flavors an enticingly juicy quality and lovely inner-mouth lift. Rather Rhone-like in texture, but a bit dominated today by its tough tannins. Not as ripe as the '97.

A big, muscular, hearty style, rich in ripe stewed plum, white pepper and beefy notes, turning firm and chewy.
