1998 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

Int'l Wine Cellar

Review Date: 05/2001

Medium red-ruby. Black raspberry, espresso and smoky oak on the nose. Supple and fairly dense, but with lovely vinosity. Some acidity yet to be absorbed. Just a suggestion of greenness. A rather serious claret with the structure to reward aging. (RP)

Very pretty blackberry and currant on the nose. Medium-bodied, with a solid core of polished tannins and a mineral, mint and licorice aftertaste. Ready to go. (JS, Web Only-2009)

Notes

When we visited the property they couldn't stop talking about how well the Merlot grapes turned out. In 1998 Pontet Canet used a much higher percentage of Merlot than normal (48%). The wine was sweet, ripe, and tasty. There were plenty of tannins, so we felt that this would would need some time to mature after its release.
