2000 Pichon Baron, Pauillac
98
Jeb Dunnuck
Review Date: 03/2019The best since the 1990, the 2000 Pichon-Longueville Baron is just now starting to shed some baby fat and develop additional complexity and layers. This still ruby/plum-colored beauty boasts a phenomenal nose of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil shavings, and new saddle leather. It’s deep, full-bodied, and sexy, with incredible amounts of texture and opulence that keeps you coming back to the glass. It makes a mockery of so many Bordeaux today that are made in a so-called elegant style yet lack the fat, richness, and density to ever hit this high a level. With low acidity, beautiful purity of fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish, it’s in the early to middle range of its drink window (I love it today) and has another two decades of sensational drinking ahead. Readers wanting to know what truly great Bordeaux tastes like should open a bottle of this!

Notes
Re-reviewed by Parker in February 2002 and given 93-96 points. Originally scored 94-96 points from Parker... ‘The finest effort from this estate since their terrific back to back vintages of 1989 and 1990, the perfumed, opaque purple-colored 2000 exhibits classy, complex aromas of incense, black fruits, vanillin, and spice box with a touch of charcoal in the background. On the attack, this full-bodied, impeccably balanced wine is powerful and sweet, with high levels of glycerin, superb concentration, beautifully integrated acidity and tannin, and a spectacularly long, layered finish. It is a profound effort from this second-growth Pauillac. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030 (April-2001)’ 92-94 points from the Wine Spectator… ‘Wonderful aromas of crushed berries and toasted oak, with plum and currant undertones. Full-bodied and very velvety, with a long fruity aftertaste. Best Pichon-Baron in I have tasted since 1990. (March-2001)’ Our notes - Has a nose of tobacco and toast with clove spice. Sweet fruit on the palate, smooth & silky texture with a beautiful sweet, dark cherry finish. This wine is super ripe, but has the tannic structure underneath for long-aging. This wine could be ready to drink in five years. NOTE - This is a pre-arrival (futures) item. The 2000 Bordeaux futures will begin arriving around Spring 2003, and some may be delayed beyond then. When the wine arrives we will contact you for shipping instructions.
