1985 Warre's Vintage Port
91
Wine Spectator
Review Date: 02/2008Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. (JS)

This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop … they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent Warre vintages. Extremely concentrated, rich, even luscious, this full-bodied, intense, opulent wine has layers of fruit, a full-blown bouquet, and impeccable balance. (RP)

Mid garnet with bricky rim. Marked aroma of lavender and dried flowers. Really floral in a wildflower way, scented not perfumed. More minty as it opens. Red-fruited and a touch minty on the palate, too – seems to show the house's more delicate style more obviously than the 2003 does. Refined, silky and remarkably pretty for a port. Tannins are dry in texture and extremely elegant. 18/20 points (JH)

Email ClydeVery nice for enjoying tonight on your 30th birthday. Affordable and still capable of ten more years cellaring.
Notes
Michael Broadbent, the late British wine critic and judge, gave this bottling 5 stars. Warre's is the oldest English Port company.
