1947 Petrus, Pomerol (Vandermeulen)

Wine Advocate
Review Date: 12/1997The 1947 Petrus is the most decadent "wine of the century." While not as port-like as the 1947 Cheval Blanc, it is a massive, unctuously-textured, viscous wine with amazing power, richness, and sweet fruit. The nose explodes from the glass, offering jammy fruit, smoke, and buttery caramel scents. The wine's viscosity is reminiscent of 10-W-40 motor oil. It is so sweet, thick, and rich one suspects a spoon could stand upright. The wine is loaded with dream-like quantities of fruit, as well as high alcohol, but there is no noticeable tannin. While drinkable now, given its amazing fruit extract, and high levels of glycerin and alcohol, it is capable of lasting two more decades. (RP)

Notes
98 Points from Neal Martin: "Tasted at a private dinner in Antwerp. This legendary wine was a Vandermeulen bottling and came from a famous Belgian collector i.e. this is no fake. It displays a similar colour to the 1949 – quite deep for its age, its russet rim giving away its pensionable age. The bouquet is heavenly with dark plum, black truffle, mint and wild heather that evolves into a more Left Bank persona, hints of cedar and undergrowth emerging with rim. The palate is medium-bodied with suppler tannins than the 1947, a little more “girth” perhaps. It is beautifully balanced with vestiges of brambly blackberry, cedar, tobacco and undergrowth that segues into a confident, saline finish. It is a delectable Petrus with the weight of what once must have been an immensely powerful Pomerol, but this bottle suggests that time is beginning to abrade and loosen the seams. This is a privilege to imbibe." (Wine Advocate, 11/2013)
