The 1989 growing season was warm in Margaux, leading to one of the earliest vintages of the century for Château Palmer, with the end result being a wine of exceptional quality. The 1989 Château Palmer is a simply magical wine, which clearly depicts the pedigree of this grand Château and the quality that can be achieved in a historic vintage like ’89. Today, this magnificent blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc offers striking aromas of black cherries, cassis, sweet pipe tobacco, roasted coffee, tar and spring florals, which are just about impossible to resist. It still shows plenty of weight on the palate, with a seamless, velvety texture and remarkable balance as it expands beautifully on to the supple finish where it leaves behind sweet fruits, tobacco and espresso notes. Today, after 25 years, this is a complete knockout and still looks to have some wonderful years ahead. (JD)

Wafting from the glass with captivating aromas of dark berries, violets, sweet soil tones and black truffle, the 1989 Palmer is medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a suave, seamless profile, terrific depth at the core and a long, sapid, perfumed finish. The 1989 Palmer has vied with the 1983 as the highlight of the decade, so it is fascinating to revisit it at 30 years old. It has a wonderful bouquet of degraded red berry fruit, singed leather and hints of game and mint, beautifully defined and still so fresh, yet undeniably old-school in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and still brimming with vigor, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a touch of cracked black pepper. A very detailed, engaging finish urges you back for another sip. (NM)

And now a chance to revisit the '89 Palmer - although I confess it is a decade since I last tasted it! Poured from a magnum. An appealing, light and delicate perfume here, sweet smoke intermingled with notes of violets and thyme. It is remarkable how all three clarets poured here (Mouton, Palmer, Montrose) just don't seem fully mature yet. Supple and well defined on entry, then relaxing in the midpalate where it has a reserved and dry texture, although still with a broad presence of flavour. Savoury and lightly spiced. Stylish composition, very long, full of promise, but for my palate it still has more in the bank to give. 18+/20 points

95 points Robert Parker writes in Wine Advocate: "One of the superstars of the vintage, Palmer’s 1989 retains a dark plum/purple color with some pink and a hint of amber creeping in at the rim. A big nose of charcoal, white flowers (acacia?), licorice, plums, and black currants comes from the glass of this elegant, medium to full-bodied, very concentrated, seamlessly made wine. Gorgeous and seemingly fully mature yet brilliantly balanced, this wine may well turn out to be a modern-day clone of the glorious 1953." (05/2002) Classified as a Third Growth in 1855, Château Palmer has long been one of Margaux's benchmark estates, with an unusually significant Merlot component alongside Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1989 comes from a warm, early-ripening Bordeaux vintage that produced many generous, long-lived Left Bank wines.
