This has a very different expression to other Sassicaia wines, which all stand as testament to their vintage and location; they evolve and give a specific impression of passing time. The tannins are still biting, baring their teeth almost, this many years on. The grip is incredible. Here you start to understand why young wines can show clever winemaking, yet it is only with older vintages where you truly understand the effect of terroir and the confidence it gives a wine as it ages. It has the signatures of a leather saddle, along with a floral-edged bowl of autumnal fruits. It holds supreme elegance and real structure. This will proceed at its own pace, and you are welcome to come along for the ride. (JA)

The 1995 Bolgheri Sassicaia still holds court, thank you very much. It reminds me of a grande dame, or a woman of influence and sophistication who lights up the room thanks to her expertly delivered, albeit antiquated charm. The wine's aged evolution is evident as the bouquet releases sure aromas of dried fruit, old spice, saffron and cola. I can't say the aromas reach perfect equilibrium, because they don't. There is a muddled fruit note in there too that subtracts from its purity. The mouthfeel is svelte and lean with finely polished and silky tannins. In fact, the wine's texture shows precision and elegance. Pretty menthol notes appear on the long finish. Drink through 2025. (ML)

Best Sassicaia since the '90. Rich in currant, blackberry, dried herbs and tanned leather on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with very soft yet fine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Hard to resist now. (JS)

Very, very healthy glowing crimson. Lilies on the nose? Scented. Lively. Lots of oomph and brash rumbustiousness. Still quite a kick of tannin. Very lively. Power! Youth. Quite opulent and Merlot-like. 18/20 points (JR)

91 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "The 1995 has an expressive, more loose-knit nose compared to the 1998, defined by red fruit than black: touches of raspberry leaf, leather, a little soy and an attractive citrus aromas that are usurped by a scent of sloes with aeration that almost disguises a vegetal element loitering stage left. Very harmonious on the palate, nicely balanced with tangible minerality, leading to a quasi-Pomerol finish with touches of game, mulberry and espresso. Drinking perfectly now. Tasted February 2010."
