Reviewed August 2023A great riesling Spatlese that makes it clear why this category has not disappeared in spite of the rise of dry German riesling. Concentrated peachy fruit is married to excellent structure and the balance of the touch of natural grape sweetness with wet stone minerality and crisp acidity is dazzling. Very long and vibrant finish.

If the von Schubert family, owners of Maximin Grünhaus, have a favored site, it is the Abstberg. This 35-acre vineyard wraps around a cone of blue Devonian slate, planted from the southeast to the southwest, so the wines wear both the morning and afternoon sun. This is a crystalline expression of Spätlese, with the focus of a Grosses Gewachs and enough sugar to round out the palate. This wine is draped with the sweetness of tropical fruit and scent of elderflowers.

The 2022 Riesling Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Spätlese is still under a slight veil of reduction. The palate then presents a serene cloud of gently sweet, creamy fruit aromatic with grapefruit skin, Mirabelle plum, an edge of Seville orange peel and a shimmer of white pepper. The sweetness is subtle and precise, framed with fine, mouth-watering lemon acidity. Absolute zestiness appears on the finish (AK)
