Reviewed January 2023Pale ruby in the glass, with a darker fruit character, well-defined raspberry and blackberry. Ripe and concentrated. Rose and violet enhance the aromatic profile. Balsamic style on the palate, with large, dense, velvety tannins, plentiful in volume before a chocolaty finish. Refreshing acidity balances the lush character. Ovello is one of the cooler and more austere MGAs in Barbaresco. The expectation could be really high in a warm vintage such as 2020. (AF)

The 2020 Barbaresco Ovello is a powerful, intense wine. Black cherry, leather, cedar, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs are all dialed up. The Ovello has more fruit intensity, extraction and oak influence than the straight Barbaresco. It's a very good wine, but there is some loss of site character. (AG)
