Descorchados
Reviewed January 2025The chardonnays from the volcanic soils of Traiguén, 700 kilometers south of Santiago, have left a significant mark on Descorchados since the 2003 edition, when we chose Sol de Sol (pioneer of the area’s chardonnays) as the best white of the year. And since then we have followed the trail of this wine as well as this region that continues to produce excellent examples of the variety. Put this one in the group. It comes from a selection of the 6.4 hectares of chardonnay, aged for 13 months in barrels (28% new oak). It has a creamy texture, but it also has acidic tension at the same time. The flavors are dense and deep, and there are notes of ripe fruit, nuts, and flowers. This is a long wine that lingers for a while on the palate with its spicy and fruity details.

This remains one of the best chardonnays from Chile from a warm year. Aromas of fine brioche, sourdough bread, minerals, lemon zest, oyster shells and a floral touch. Taut and medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with a beautiful texture and a fresh streak of acidity that's not too demanding. Flinty and really long. It spent 13 months in French oak barrels, with 28% new wood. (ZS)

The 2023 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay spent 13 months in 400-liter barrels, less than a third new—a reduction from the norm due to the warm vintage conditions. It opens with an elegantly decadent nose of orchard and stone fruits with creamy, woody flourishes while retaining a laser-like focus. The palate mirrors this pitch-perfect balance, displaying an understated, slow-moving texture enlivened with subtle electricity. It concludes with a round yet stony and intensely long finish that continuously develops nuance and dimension with time in the glass. This is an age-worthy reference point for Chilean Chardonnay.

Hot elsewhere in Chile, the 2023 vintage was cool in southerly Traiguén, where this exceptional Chardonnay is produced. Wild fermented, with 25% malolactic and 28% new wood, it’s a stony, savoury delight with good weight and concentration, flavours of dried honey, toast and citrus zest, some crème fraîche and a hint of nectarine sweetness.
