Reviewed August 2024Intense aromas of oyster shell and dark fruit, such as black cherries and blackberries, together with some black olives, dark mushrooms and just a touch of clove. It’s medium- to full-bodied with linear and long tannins and a powerful finish. Yet, it’s polished and refined at the same time. Needs time to open, but there’s so much going on here. From Pio Cesare’s vineyard in the Bricco di Treiso MGA, the 2021 Il Bricco is loaded with class and energy. It opens with heady scents of iris, perfumed berry, cake spice and a whiff of pine forest while the elegant, intense palate delivers raspberry compote, wild red cherry, cake spice and licorice. It’s well balanced, with an age-worthy structure thanks to firm, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. (KO)

The 2021 Barbaresco Il Bricco caresses the palate with crushed raspberry, cinnamon, rose petal, cedar, sweet spice and pipe tobacco. Sensual at first, the 2021 is deceptive, as it packs a pretty substantial punch of acidity, tannin and overall structure. I find it absolutely beguiling and wonderfully complex right out of the gate.

Perched in Treiso's loftiest heights where cool breezes whisper to Nebbiolo vines, Il Bricco crafts liquid poetry. Dark marasca cherries play a duet, some fresh from the branch, others transformed into candied jewels, while incense smoke and flower petals dance through the air. The palate performs a high wire act, balancing graceful power with aristocratic tannins from its 30 month slumber in French and Slavonian oak. A wine that's dressed for tonight's gala but has decades of stories yet to tell. (JP)
