James Suckling

Reviewed July 2025
Beautiful nose with impressive concentration and clarity, offering red berries, mulberries, exotic spices, crushed hazelnuts and hints of iodine, wet undergrowth and chocolate. Compact, focused and balanced, with a medium to full body and refined, well-integrated tannins that run the length of the wine, leading to a seamless, fine-textured finish. Well crafted, broad and long but not overwhelming. Drink or hold. (AS)

The olfactory imprint recalls notes of red fruits, plum and balsamic hints. The structure is firm, the tannins well integrated, and the sip develops dynamically, stretching towards a distinctive finish. This pure Sangiovese comes from a cru of almost 50-year-old vines on clayey soils and is aged in wood for 24 months. (AP)

The 2021 Nobile Poggetto di Sopra lifts from the glass with an enticing blend of spiced blood orange, mint leaf, clove and dried black cherry scents. Silken and serene, this impresses with its energy and youthful poise, with a potent mix of tart wild berry and citrus tones that pucker the cheeks as hints of white pepper add a beguiling spiciness toward the close. The 2021 is dramatically long and staining, with fine-grained tannins and a bitter tinge of licorice that leaves the cheeks puckered. The balance here is something to behold, as is the wine's complexity. This is fantastic. 94+ (EG)

Spicy cherry and raspberry fruit is accented by iron and wild herbs in this succulent red. Dense, assertive tannins ply the long, burly finish. There’s a core of ripe fruit, so be patient. Best from 2028 through 2043. (BS)

Notes

Centered on the Tuscan hill town of Montepulciano, Vino Nobile is built around Sangiovese, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Avignonesi’s 2021 “Poggetto di Sopra” comes from this historic appellation, which became one of Italy’s first DOCGs in 1980. Despite the shared name, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is distinct from wines named for the Montepulciano grape.
