James Suckling
Reviewed February 2026A layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas of balsamic, eucalyptus, bergamot, licorice, bark and cherry pits. Elegant on the palate as well, with a medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, fine chalky tannins and a firm, polished finish. Drink or hold. (AF)

Decanter
An olfactory profile of ripe cherry, graphite, liquorice and a slight spiciness. Despite the considerable substance, the sip’s elegance and balance accompany a dynamic, fluid development, with the fruit returning to encourage further drinking. The winery is certified B Corp – an assessment of governance, workforce, community, environment and customers. (AP)

Vinous
The 2022 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is darkly floral and perfumed, with crushed blackberries, allspice and rosemary. Ripe red and black fruits find balance through a tart citrus twang. Fine tannins impart poise on the long, youthfully tense finish. This punches well above its weight—bury a few in the cellar and reap the rewards. (EG)
Notes
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano takes its name from the Tuscan hill town, not the Montepulciano grape. Sangiovese, traditionally known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, is the foundation of this appellation. Avignonesi’s 2022 carries a designation that became one of Italy’s first DOCGs in 1980, a milestone in the formal recognition of Tuscany’s historic wines.
