The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is another exceptional wine in this range from Massimo and Erin di Costanzo. Graphite, tea leaves, sage, menthol, licorice and dried herbs open first, until the wine's dynamic energy and structure start to take over. The 2023 possesses serious mid-palate depth and potent tannins to match. Obviously the 2023 is a baby, but its significant potential is evident.

There’s a great balance of power and freshness here with aromas of blackcurrants, olive brine, ferrous tones, tobacco leaves and Provençal herbs. The palate is finely constructed with a rounded mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins that lead into a mineral, earth-driven finish. From vines planted in 1968. Drink or hold.

Decanter
The 2023 vintage, a cool year, presented challenges to Montecillo. Picked in the second week of October (late for this site). The wine exhibits the site’s signature lift, albeit in a more restrained expression this year. There’s structure, from great acidity and firm tannins giving shape to aromas of violets, currants, and dried herbs, with a woodsy edge from time in oak. On the palate, tart plum and red fruit lead into a subtle touch of minerality through the finish.

These dry-farmed old vines have yielded a classic 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard, redolent of dried flowers, cassis and ripe cherries. It's medium- to full-bodied, intense, silky and refined yet streamlined and energetic, with a lingering finish. Give it another several years in the bottle before pulling a cork.
