Reviewed September 2026The 2016 Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie delivers old-school aromatics of dried cherries, complementary nectarine, musky rose petals, crushed rocks and leather strap. It is lifted and finessed with a pulse of zesty acidity and a solid core of tart wild berry and citrus. A bitter tinge lingers as nuances of tart blackberry and blood orange fade. There’s a pleasurable rusticity to the 2016 that I find very attractive. (EG)

Coming from 70-year-old vines, the 2016 Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie is a deeper red color and reveals notes of sweet amaro macerated herbs, menthol, and baked red plums all melding together, but it has a lot to offer. Super-salty and mouthwatering, with ripe tannins and bright acidity, it has ripeness but is still holding together and seems as though it will have a slow maturation from this point, even though it’s already mature. Drink over the next 6-7 years. This wine has tons of personality and character. (AF)
