The most balanced and transparent wine in the range, the 2023 Les Jardinières is showing superbly this year. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of blood orange, elderflower, violets, peonies and dark cherries, it’s medium- to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a fleshy yet vibrant core of fruit and beautifully integrated tannins. Concluding with a long, perfumed and ethereal finish, this is one of the vintage’s most complete and characterful renditions of Gigondas. (YC) 96+

A juicy, lively and precise Gigondas, showing red berries, blood oranges and baking spices on the nose. Medium-bodied, it has fine tannins and refined texture, silky yet full of verve with a driven and vivid expression. Balanced, fresh and crunchy. (KD)

The inaugural 2023 Gigondas .1871 Les Jardinières (called Cuvée Tradition 1871 up until 2022) shows well from bottle, unwinding with just-ripe red fruits, fresh violets and subtle stemmy tones. Delicate and refined, the smooth-textured 2023 wraps up with finesse and energy on the long, elegant final impression. Give it one more year in bottle to fully come together. (NG)

Established in 1900 in the heart of Gigondas, Gour de Chaulé is now run by the founder's great-great-grandson, Paul Fumoso. For a time, this was a woman-led property. Aline Bonfils earned fame for the domaine, and was actively involvedin making wines and creating domaine bottlings before handing the reigns to her daughter, Stéphanie. The estate is comprised of 15 hectares planted in the surrounding region, 10 of which are within the Gigondas appellation. Grenache is the main grape variety, making up more than 80% of the blend with Syrah and Mourvèdre making up the rest. Grapes are harvested manually and never destemmed. Élevage is in large oak foudres where the wine rests for about 18 months until it's bottled--unfined and unfiltered. The end result is a traditionally made and balanced wine that reflects some of the best that Gigondas has to offer.
