Reviewed February 2023A beautifully exotic nose, full of tangy peppercorns, wax, black cherries, dark cherries, incense and bacon. Flowers, too. Very concentrated and juicy but nothing hefty here. Tannins are really punchy and mealy. Mineral and delicious. Less new oak from 2020, with more foudre use instead. Already drinkable now, but will age beautifully. One of the best from this estate. There is a big difference in style in the 2021 Las Pizarras Syrah compared with previous years, and the cooler conditions of the year also accentuated those differences that make it more northern Rhône-ish than ever, with intense aromas of violets, subtle smokiness and minerality. It's juicy with super fine tannins and a superb texture. They changed the élevage to have 85% of the volume in foudre and a mere 15% of the wine matured in barrels. (LG)

The 2021 Syrah Las Pizarras from Aconcagua Costa opens with tapenade, truffle, oregano and balsamic herbs, accented by a touch of charcuterie. The palate is intriguing with fine tannins and a dark edge on the finish. Aromas of mushrooms add further depth. A highly distinctive Syrah. (LG)
