Another exceptional vintage, the 2023 Tempranillo Impulsivo is all varietal and balanced throughout in balsamic-laced black and red fruit. Grown at high elevation, the grapes were planted in 2000 and are rare in the state. Aged over 18 months in 40% new oak, it's a remarkably graceful yet powerful wine, richly medium-bodied with structure and firm tannins that add complexity to the rounded mouthfeel of gamey umami. This is just so good; drink now through 2043.

Int'l Wine Review

Dark and saturated purple-ruby in hue, the 2023 Cayuse Impulsivo Tempranillo from the Walla Walla Valley delivers a brooding, savory profile that feels both feral and exquisitely composed. Aromas of black plum, violet pastel, cured meat, tamarind, and graphite unfold with notes of toasted seeds and a saline edge that keeps the wine lifted despite its depth. The palate is generous and velvety, yet there is nothing heavy-handed about it, as polished cedary influence and dense extract are countered by mineral tension and a persistent iron-like streak. Notes of black plum, black olive, and five-spice thread through the fruit, giving the wine a distinctly Iberian sensibility filtered through the rocky soul of its site. Already compelling, it has the substance and balance to evolve with confidence over the next decade. Almost 400 cases made.

The 2023 Tempranillo Impulsivo is a spice box on the nose, with a collage of dried flowers and wild herbs, incense, pine shavings, plums and smoked cured meats forming its complex bouquet. It splashes across the palate with a pretty inner sweetness up front, contrasted by citrus-tinged red and black fruits that cascade beneath an air of cinnamon and clove. It leaves the senses buzzing, as a residual bump of zesty acidity adds freshness and hints of black pepper mingle with edgy tannins. While youthfully structured, the 2023 is a joy to taste. (EG)
