1971 Gilette "Crème de Tête," Sauternes (bin soiled, scuffed label)
90
Vinous
Review Date: 06/2014The 1971 Gilette Crème de Tête has a slightly muffled nose at first, but clears with aeration to reveal scents of dried honey, pressed white flowers, augmented by a touch of curry powder and marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly viscous entry, nicely balanced with orange rind and spice. This is focused, with just the right amount of nuttiness to leave a dry taste that begs another sip. This is a fine 1971. (NM)

Notes
Gilette's proprietor, Christian Medeville, is one of the most unique winemakers in Sauternes. He holds his wines in small epoxy-lined concrete vats for anything from 12-25 years before bottling, and then holds them in bottle for another 3-5 years in his cellars before finally releasing them to the market. The current release is the 1981. Two cuvees are often, but not always, produced: the 'doux' or demi-doux' and a Crème de Tête. The luscious Crème de Tête is a kind of Auslese, produced from the most botrytised grapes and vinified separately. Robert Parker described the 1971 Gilette Crème de Tête as: "This is a more reserved, austere, restrained wine, with a tight but attractive nose of loamy earth, roasted coffee, herbs, and sweet, honeyed fruit. Medium to full bodied, with tightly wound flavours, good acidity, and moderate levels of botrytis, this is a less generous yet stylish, polite Gilette that should continue to age well for 15 or more years. Last tasted 3/97."
