The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown (2,150 cases of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) is spectacular. An inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of espresso roast, melted fudge, blackberries, currants, and smoke. Rich, with great intensity, tremendous purity, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, and good underlying tannin as well as freshness. (RP)

Classic Oakville, detailed and refined, powerful in fruit and tannins; assertive and authoritative, yet manages to be graceful and elegant. A fulfilling wine, balanced and harmonious. Clearly has the stuffing to enjoy a ripe old age. *Cellar Selection*

Good full ruby. Superripe aromas of blackcurrant syrup, chocolate, tar and fruit cake. Dense, tarry and sweet, with cassis, licorice and fruit cake flavors. The building tannins are substantial and broad but not at all dry. Already delicious, but has the spine to develop in bottle for a decade or more. Rudd's 2001s were vinified by David Ramey but finished by Charles Thomas, who assumed winemaking responsibilities here in the spring of 2002. (ST)

Supple, with complex currant, anise, mineral, herb and sage flavors that are well-defined, adding hints of espresso and fresh earth. The tannins are ripe and fine-grained and the finish reveals extra dimensions of depth and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. (JL)
