Review Date: 12/1995

The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve outperformed the 1992 at the winery, revealing a concentrated, splendidly saturated dark purple color, wonderfully sweet, intense aromas of chocolate, smoke, vanilla beans, and rich blackcurrant fruit. The wine tastes more extracted than the 1992, with a sweeter, more expansive, glycerin-imbued mid-section and finish. Although it carries as much tannin as the 1992, the tannin is riper as well as better integrated. The 1993 is a 25-30 years wine that ideally needs another 4-5 years of cellaring. All things considered, there is plenty to be excited about at the Robert Mondavi winery. (RP)

Notes

Founded in 1966 by winemaking pioneer and icon Robert Mondavi, the winery that bears his name is an enduring presence and shining symbol of California's Napa Valley. The first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades following the repeal of Prohibition, Robert Mondavi Winery created the foundation for the modern-day California wine industry. An ardent believer that wines should reflect their origins, Mr. Mondavi charted a winemaking course that is now legendary. On reviewing the 1993 vintage, critic Robert Parker noted that Robert Mondavi Winery "is undeniably the spiritual and qualitative leader of that sector of the California wine industry dedicated to producing world-class wines."
