I did not realize until this visit that the domaine’s vines in les Boivins are fully one hundred years of age! I had written in the past that they were seventy-plus years of age, but Pierre-Jean corrected me on this count. The 2023 Boivins has turned out beautifully, revealing a deep and complex bouquet cassis, sweet dark berries, bitter chocolate, a superb base of soil, grilled meats, cedar and a touch of Mazy-Chambertin-like sweet herb tones in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and focused, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, ripe tannins and a long, complex and very well balanced finish. This has a proper structural chassis, so some time in the cellar will be necessary to soften up its tannins. (Drink between 2032-2060)

Dark centre, with a crimson purple rim. A greater heart to this is evident on the nose. Pierre-Jean links the nose of his Boivin to that of the Mazy-Chambertin and I can see that. Fair tannins, excellent tension, quite a tough nut but so much fruit. Five years minimum. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2025.

Soft wood sets off the slightly spicier nose of wild black currant, forest floor and a pretty floral nuance. There is a bit better vibrancy and richness to the medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the balanced, persistent and firm finale that is also mildly chewy and warm.

The 2023 Marsannay Boivin, which Roty described as the little brother of his Mazy-Chambertin, has a tightly knit nose, quite feisty and perhaps just missing the finesse of the other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like purity on the entry. Fine grip, quite firm in texture with a sturdy finish; therefore give this two or three years in bottle.(NM)
