Reviewed January 2026The old vine vineyard of la Brunelle lies right outside the back door of the domaine. These old vines have turned out a lovely wine in the 2023 vintage. The wine’s nascently complex bouquet hops from the glass in a mix of cassis, dark berries, coffee bean, woodsmoke, a fine base of Gevrey’s dark soils and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and nicely tangy in personality, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil signature, ripe tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. Fine juice. (Drink between 2033-2065)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle has an upfront earthy bouquet with brambly red fruit, touches of violet and damp loamy soil. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive purity of fruit, a dash of soy infusing the red berry fruit with a touch of spice lining the finish. Bon vin.(NM)

Note: Roty is one of two producers. Distinctly ripe though still agreeably fresh and quite spicy aromas include those of kirsch, black cherry liqueur and violet along with subtle earth nuances lurking in the background. The vibrant and delicious middle weight flavors are not particularly dense though I like their caressing mouthfeel while retaining good delineation on the refreshing, balanced and lingering finale. This too could use better depth but that should reasonably occur if given a few years of keeping. Worth a look in an age-worthy package.*Burghound Outstanding!*

A dark crimson colour. The softer approach of Brunelle is immediately apparent, with its higher pH. Simmering strawberries with, happily, enough acidity behind. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Nov 2025.
