Reviewed January 2026The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas was the most closed on the nose and it refuses to open in the glass. Grumpy! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, bright red cherry and strawberry fruit with admirable mineralité that bursts open on the finish. Tuck this away to allow the aromas to open and you will have a less grumpy and more delicious Gevrey on your hands.(NM)

In my experience, the Clos Prieur-Bas bottling is always the most black fruity of these single vineyard cuvées of Gevrey AC chez Roty, and such is the case again with the lovely 2023 version. The beautifully black fruity nose offers up scents of cassis, dark berries, espresso, grilled meats, a fine base of dark soil tones and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and full-bodied, with a fine core, excellent soil signature and grip, lovely early complexity and impressive mineral drive on the long, balanced and ripely tannic finish. Another excellent old vine bottling of a single lieu à dit. (Drink between 2033-2065)

Note: from the villages portion of the vineyard. A slightly more elegant, and airier, nose displays aromas of vaguely earthy red berries, underbrush and spice that are trimmed in subtle wood nuances. There is excellent punch, if again only average density, to the utterly delicious, sleek and inviting medium-bodied flavors that flash evident minerality on the wonderfully refreshing, long and well-balanced finish. This is really quite fine, even sophisticated, which is rarely the case for Gevrey villages wines. Recommended provided you intend to cellar it at least for a few years.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Medium crimson in colour, not one of the most demonstrative noses. Attractive fruit on the nose, more strawberry than other red fruits with still a few tannins to surmount, but heading in the right direction. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Nov 2025.
