I had always known that the vines in the Rotys’ parcel of Charmes-Chambertin were absolutely ancient, but I had no idea that this also applied to their vines in Mazy, which were planted in 1919! These one hundred and four year-old vines have produced a masterpiece in the 2023 vintage, delivering an aromatic constellation of black cherries, dark berries, cassis, grilled meats, that lovely touch of signature Mazy sweet vegetality (that I can never accurately describe), a complex base of dark soil tones, a hint of anise and plenty of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, precise and bottomless in its depth of old vine fruit at the core, with great soil signature and grip, ripe, firm and perfectly integrated tannins and great balance on the very, very long and complex finish. A stunning young wine, but patience will be required! (Drink between 2040-2100)

The 2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, damp undergrowth and touches of red cherries coming through mixed with truffle. The palate is very well balanced with a patina of oak to be subsumed as usual. But this is finely balanced with a succulent blood orange tinged finish that displays immense purity of fruit. Up there with the 2022.(NM)

A rich dark crimson. Full frontal dark strawberry on the nose. There is power up at the front but with a softness in style, low to medium acidity, tannins smothered by the fruit, considerable length, all that is missing is the tension and perhaps a little more precision. Drink from 2033-2045. Tasted Nov 2025.

Note: from a .12 ha parcel in Mazis Bas. Moderate wood fights a bit with the exuberantly spicy and quite sauvage-suffused nose of black cherry liqueur aromas. The rich, full-bodied and powerful tautly muscular flavors exude evident minerality on the impressively long, firm and ever-so-slightly warm finale where a hint of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This does need to develop better depth but that should gradually happen over time.
