An intensely deep purple colour. Amazingly reductive right from the outset. The dark berries retain a crispness, not too sunny, but with an amazing opulence. Remarkably sensual, with too thick a texture to be described as velvet, but perhaps the French word velouté works. The structure is all there but hidden under the thick dark berries. Excellent! Drink from 2035-2048. Tasted Nov 2025.

To my knowledge, these are the oldest vines still in production in all of Burgundy, as they were planted in 1881 and 1882. These venerable old vines have produced a masterpiece of the 2023 vintage, which delivers a deep, complex and old viney bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, coffee bean, a superb foundation of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, lovely spices and a generous framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and powerful in personality, but seamlessly balanced, with a bottomless core of old vine fruit, fine soil signature and grip and a long, ripely tannic and very, very classy finish. All this beautiful wine needs is enough time in the cellar to properly soften up its tannins and blossom completely. 96+

Note: from a .16 ha holding of 3 parcels in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that those that have died over the years have been replanted. Here too there just enough wood to notice framing the beautifully layered aromas of poached plum, dark cherry, violet, warm earth and a similar hint of exotic tea. Once again the mouthfeel of the bigger-bodied flavors is quite sleek and with good vibrancy while delivering wonderfully length on the bitter chocolate-inflected finish where once again just enough warmth is present to warrant commenting on. This too is terrific with the development potential to match.

The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru takes time to unfold on the nose with raspberry and wild strawberry, damp earthy soil and touches of pine in the background. Very backward. The palate is very well balanced with saturated tannins, layers of lightly spiced red fruit and touches of red peppercorns towards the Mazoyères-like finish. Very classy. Jean-Pierre Roty was effusive about this but of all the cuvées it will need time in bottle.(NM)
