2023 Domaine Joseph Roty Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Not surprisingly, the domaine’s vines in their tiny parcel of Griottes-Chambertin were also planted all the way back in 1919. There is only a barrel and a half of this wine in the cellars in more generous vintages like 2023 and I hesitate to think how much they will have in a much shorter crop like 2024. In any case, the 2023 Griottes is a stunning young wine, delivering a deep and complex bouquet of red and black cherries, dark berries, smoked meats, a beautiful foundation of chalky minerality, a touch of woodsmoke, brown spices, a hint of Gevrey mustard seed and a fine framing of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and bottomless at the core with old vine fruit, ripe, firm tannins, great balance and grip and simply stunning length on the complex and very, very promising finish.
